Carrigan and Radar began the walk. Once they were out of earshot of the others, Radar turned to Carrigan, "So, is your sister always like that?"
"Pretty much," Carrigan laughed, "Don't worry, though. Unless you do something to really bother her, she won't do anything more than threaten you."
Radar sighed, "Thank Notch! She really freaks me out!"
"She's actually not so bad once you get to know her."
"So.." Radar began, "Have you seen anyone other than the old man? We're trying to find out who all was kidnapped."
Carrigan thought for a bit, "I recognized Harper and Otto, but I didn't recognize the other girl in one room I went into. They really must've made the bosses here really mad for what they did. They were dangling from the ceiling by the hands." Her smile vanished.
"What did the girl look like?" Radar asked, wide eyed. She turned to him, "She had black hair and green e-"
"Oh no! Jesse!"
Carrigan gasped, "Do you mean 'Jesse' as in the girl who defeated Mevia and Hadrian?"
He nodded. Her lime-green eyes flashed with fear, "Then we really need to hurry!" She began to speed-walk and Radar came up beside her, "What are they planning on doing to her?"
"Nothing good. We just need to save her before they get the chance to. They intend on freeing the others, eventually.. but not Jesse, Harper, or Otto."
"I hope this isn't too personal of a question, but are you a prisoner too?" Radar asked.
Carrigan bit her lip, "In a way.. Can I tell you a secret?"
He nodded. She sighed, "When I was younger, my parents died. So, I had to go to my great-uncle Hadrian."
"He's your uncle?" Radar was shocked. She corrected him, "Great-uncle. Anyways, long story short, my life became miserable really fast. I've seen and had to do horrible things with 'my job here' as Hadrian calls it. I was forced to kill people, set up traps, and do other things I'd rather die than do. Of course I never actually killed anyone for permanent." She turned to him, "For a while, there were 'games' here where people would attempt to spleef- it's kind of like killing- one another. That's where Delcie and I met. We always tried to protect one another from the maniacs. Then, once someone 'died', they re-spawned in the mines where they'd be trapped for the rest of their lives. It's awful there. I've only had to go a handful of times, but Hadrian pulled me out."
"How is that possible? To just come back alive?" Radar was impressed. Carrigan looked down, "It's a horrible thing to go through. Trust me, it sounds good, but it's miserable. You lose everything you own and it goes to Hadrian and Mevia.. Anyways, after Jesse and her friends defeated them, the games, re-spawning, and death altogether was eliminated. That was until they came back and well.. you know the rest. They are intending on starting the games back up, but this time, targeting your friends without them having the ability to re-spawn. That's why we need to hurry."
Radar nodded, "Thanks for trusting me enough to tell me something that personal." His voice was calm, but his expression told a different story. She nodded, "You're a great guy, I can tell." They both slightly blushed slightly at that.
Carrigan pointed at the door up ahead and they race for it, opening it cautiously. From the looks of it, it was safe in the front. Carrigan walked in, "I've only been in here twice, but traps are constantly being put in, so be careful."
Radar nodded and watched the blue walls, floors, and ceiling as if they would try to kill him at any second.
"How do you know Jesse?" Carrigan asked, she faced the front and kept eyes aware. Radar glanced around, "My dad died when I was a kid, and my mom died a few years ago. After the accident, I had nowhere to go. Neither of my parents had siblings and my grandparents live who knows where. I traveled from city to city trying to find a job and a home, even at my young age, but nobody would hire a twelve year old. I finally got a job working for the girl with blonde hair that you saw back there."
She turned to him, "She didn't seem like a very nice person."
He shook his head, "Not really. She's very self-absorbed. She fired me after about six months and then I found out about Beacontown. I went there, and Jesse had sympathy on me. She gave me my dream job, gave me a home, and a new family. I lived with her until I was fifteen, and then I decided to build my own house and live there. She was like my mother in so many ways, even looks! I owe her for everything I am and who I've become."
"Wow." Carrigan's brows raised, "She sounds amazing. I can't wait to meet her."
"What if we don't get there in time?" Radar panicked. Carrigan turned to him and rubbed his back, "We can. And we will."
Suddenly, multiple cave spiders dropped from the ceiling. Carrigan drew her obsidian sword and Radar pulled out his bow and arrows. Carrigan screeched as she charged one. She leapt on top of one, and stabbed her sword into it. It poofed away and she turned in time to slash one that was inches from her face.
Meanwhile, Radar pulled back the bow and aimed the arrow at the nearest spider, while backing towards the wall for better distance from them. He released the grip and it killed the spider. He heard one hissing behind him, so he grabbed an arrow, twisted it, stabbed the spider, and put it back on the bow. (That move he learned from seeing Xara do it a few years ago.)
He killed a few more, but didn't notice another one creeping down the wall towards him. It leapt onto his leg and he jumped. He turned to see it dangling there angrily. He tried to shake it off, but was unsuccessful.
Carrigan had just barely finished off the last spider near her when she heard a scream and she turned to see a spider dangling onto Radar's right leg. Her heart skipped a beat as she raced towards him, "Don't let it bite you! Their bites are poisonous and can kill you!"
Radar gulped and stabbed his arrow through it right as it bit his leg. One second too late. It poofed as he dropped to the ground.
"Radar!" Carrigan finally made it to him. She wished she made it there fast enough to prevent this, but he was too far away. She knelt beside him and pulled him onto her lap. She knew what she had to do. She knew Delcie would be mad and call it a waste, but Carrigan felt differently. She couldn't let Radar die. They had a connection.
She pulled one of her healing potions from her waistband and popped it open. She poured the liquid into his mouth.
She looked around for danger, but luckily, the coast was clear. Carrigan gripped him tightly. Please let this heal him. Please don't be too late! She prayed silently.
