Chapter Eight: The Mission

Bobbi's POV

After playing until late last night, I went back to my room and went straight to bed. It's 5am now and Ms Hand came to my room, woke me up and told me that Fury requested my presence. So much for requesting. So I ran to the office as fast as I could and as covertly as possible because Fury waking me up on a mission this early while everyone else is sleeping must mean he's sending me on a mission. Now I just arrived in Fury's office. I heard the door open and I turned around to see Clint. I suddenly broke the glass sculptures of the shelf I was leaning on and I crouched down to pick up the broken pieces. Is this for real? Am I dreaming? I mean, usually it's him and Nat but this is really unusual.

"Hey, Barb," he greeted me. The only person to call me Barb was Hunter but I was willing to ignore that since he doesn't know that. He crouched down next to me and picked up a piece of the broken glass sculpture. "Mind if I help you out?" He asked.

"Hey Clint," I didn't dare look at him. I swear if I looked at him, my heart would just rip right out of my body. And oh my God, his breath. How does it smell so good in the morning? He picked up some of the pieces with me.

"They wake you up too?" He asked me. I guess they did the same thing to him too. I nodded my head without looking at him.

"I have things to do and places where I need to be so put those down and listen carefully 'cause I won't  be repeating myself. Understood?" We both stood up and nodded. When Fury was serious, no one dared to challenge him. I don't think anybody's even seen him smile. Ever. "Our signals picked up something fishy on Liberty Island but we don't know what it is. We are sending you two there on a covert mission. Your mission is to observe and report. Understood? Any questions?" He told us. Clint raised his hand.

"This is a bit unusual, sir. Why are you sending me with Nat on this one?" Fury stood up. I don't know if that's good or bad.

"Romanoff is on punishment. Besides, I'm already sending an Avenger-In-Training on this mission. I can't afford anybody else to fall behind on their training," Clint nodded his head. I guess he isn't as excited as I am for our first mission together. The look on his face says it all. He'd rather be with Natasha than me. "Go put on your mission suits. Me and Selvig have somewhere we need to go," we left and I went to change into my mission suit. I grabbed my batons. I loved my batons. They were my favourite things to play with as a kid and when I came to S.H.I.E.L.D, they upgraded them with electrostingers like Nat's gauntlets complete with lasers too. I went underneath the school where the Quinjet usually was and found Clint loading up on his trick arrows. It was pretty creative of him to take ancient weapons like arrows and turn them so modern. I put my batons inside the holster on my back.

"You use special weapons too?" He asked me. I'm so glad he noticed. This is the first mission we're going on together after all. I'm a bit tempted to tell him about my feeling towards him but I don't wanna compromise the mission.

"Yep. And if that fails me, I always have my gun right here," I tapped on my gun which was on my left thigh holster. He laughed at the joke and he showed me that he has a gun on his left thigh holster too. How similar are we? Oh my gosh. I can't help but be mesmerized by that smile on his face. I walked towards to Quinjet entrance.

"After you, my lady," he bowed as he gestured for me to get onboard the Jet with his hand. I knew from Nat that he had a sense of humour but I didn't know he was this amusing. He got on and jump-started the plane as we flew away from the school and activated cloaking on the plane. "Listen, Bobbi. I'm sorry about what I said in Fury's office about Nat. It's just... I'm so used to working with her and..."

"It's okay Clint," I said. Again Natasha pops up in the conversation. Why do I even try? He has a much better solid chance of ending up with her than me.
