A few days after our good news Domingo started acting strange, he was becoming distant and very secretive. He was making phones calls that would abruptly end when I walked into the room and when I was on the computer I noticed that all of the search history had been deleted.
I knew he wouldn’t cheat on me but I couldn’t for the life of me work out what he was doing and when I tried to ask him he would either change the subject or simply say nothing. I tried to catch him out by listening at the door when he was on the phone but he was a little cleverer that I had given him credit for because he would talk in rapid coded Spanish knowing that I would never be able to decipher it.
It was unfair and I had been pouting for the last few days, he kept kissing me and telling me everything was ok but when he wouldn’t spill more my pet lip just got worse. He would laugh and leave for work saying he loved me and he would be home soon.
I was still unable to go back to work, although I was feeling slightly better I didn’t want to delay my recovery anymore so I bit my tongue and carried on being a father to Emily instead. I did however pop in from time to time to see all of the kids and find out how they were getting on, every so often I would come in to find that I had either lost one or that one had got better and had left to go home.
A few days later and Domingo was off for a teacher training day, he was acting all weird and antsy as if something was bothering him but he wouldn’t tell me if I asked so I kept quiet. All day he wouldn’t settle and kept pacing around the room, eventually I snapped and asked him what the hell was wrong with him but he just smiled and continued pacing.
Around an hour later the doorbell rang and I heard him call from the bedroom asking me to get the door. When I opened it I almost collapsed under the weight of the woman now wrapped around my neck, I pulled away in shock and turned to see Domingo leaning against the door frame smirking…so this is what he was planning.
I turned back to my mum and watch as she promptly burst into tears, Maria joined in the fussing over me and Alfie and Elliot behind them just scoffed. I told her to calm down and I led them all into the small living room to find out how long they had been planning this.
It turned out Domingo had been straight on the phone to them when we had been given our good news and my mum started the ball rolling saying she wanted to visit now. She had kept away up until now at my request but she couldn’t wait any longer I was her baby and she needed to see me.
She apologised for my dad not being here but he was working away at the moment so she and Maria had decide to come alone. However, when Alfie and Elliot got wind of it they had wanted to come along too as Alfie hadn’t been to London since the wedding and he missed us both.
Domingo walked in a moment later with a babbling little girl in his arms, she was squirming around wanting to be put down so he obliged and she walked on trembling legs to the couch where my mum sat. When she giggled the room erupted in chatter about how big she had become and how grown up she looked, I reminded them she was only eleven months but they shushed me immediately.
Alfie was standing there looking all dopey as he had never seen Emily yet and I could tell he was fighting the urge to run over and snatch her up. I looked to him and smiled and gestured for him to approach her laughing and joking that she wouldn’t bite… much.
