Izzie
When I got inside I was greeted by Christina who was screaming at resident. She slammed a chart down on the front counter and spoke so fast that my brain couldn't catch up before she tightened her pony tail and walked away. I looked at the resident who was shuffling through the papers with a baffled look. He then pulled out a yellow paper with wide eyes and ran in the direction that Christina had parted in moments earlier. The hospital was packed today. Doctors were scrambling around with charts and medical equipment. Nurses were moving patients from place to place. I looked around and realized that if I kept standing here I would quickly be ran over by a crash cart or a gurney so I went to see what time Alex ended up scheduling our surgery for.Two surgeons were updating the OR board when I got there. One of the two women resembled the woman that Alex introduced me to. Jo Wilson. The other one was much younger and wore light colored scrubs, an intern. Without being noticed I scanned the board for my name and found it beside OR 2, but just as quickly as I spotted it, it was gone. The intern had erased it from the board per Wilson's request.
"What's going on?" I questioned when another doctors name was being written in the spot mine was.
Wilson turned around sharply at the sound of my voice. "Oh Hi" she smiled "non emergent surgeries have been getting pushed all morning in place of patients that came in from the pile up on the highway. Don't worry though, I'm sure it will be rescheduled for tomorrow."
"Okay except I have a time limit on my trip down here and I need that surgery today not tomorrow." I said. My response made her tilt her head a bit in confusion as she sorted through the words. She re adjusted her posture and answered.
" I know a lot of doctors from out of town feel the same way but there isn't anything I can do. I have been here all night trying to figure out what to do but this is the only plan that is going to work for the ER."
"You've been here all night?" I asked.
"Yeah why?"
"Oh, it's nothing. It's just I ran into Alex and Meredith this morning and Alex didn't seem to know where you were and he seemed really worried. You might want to tell him." I gave her a smile but her expression changed.
"He is okay not knowing." She said turning back to the board.
"Yeah the Alex I know is never okay with not knowing. In fact, when I left he called me for days on end. He sounded like he really cared, but then again it was Alex so no one really knew what he was thinking or what he wanted." I offered a small giggle but she didn't accept it. Instead she turned back to me. Behind her I saw the intern shove her face in the tablet she was holding and pretended not to listen.
"Yeah the Alex you knew was someone that My Alex wouldn't even associate with so why are you trying to pretend like things haven't changed? " She said crossing her arms.
"I know they have changed but not enough for me to believe that Alex would prefer Snow White over someone who understands him." I shot back mimicking her stance
"I'm not a princess and this isn't Disneyland. And instead of firing shots at me why don't you do the job you came here to do and leave me and my relationship alone." She said lowing her voice to a whisper when she realized she was drawing attention
"Fine I will leave your relationship alone. Get my surgery scheduled for today. A little boy shouldn't have to wait to breath don't you think Dr. Wilson?"
"Yeah I will see what I can do about that." She said giving me a fake and quick smile and then turning back to her intern. I rubbed my face and walked away. I honestly didn't want to pick a fight with her because I knew what Alex would think but I want to know what makes her so special that Alex, the same Alex that slept with a dozen girls through this residency, would settle down with her. Either way I decided to ignore it and make my way to the cafeteria for breakfast.
Alex
I dropped Mer's kids off at daycare and then met her and Christina in the cafeteria. They were sitting side by side talking about an incident that happened with Deluca I guess. I sat my tray down across the table from them and sat down in the chair. My tray didn't have much. A blueberry muffin, two apples, and a granola bar. As soon as I sat down Meredith looked up at me."So I found Wilson but she was having a discussion with Izzie and I was not getting in the middle of that." Meredith said.
I looked at Meredith and then at Christina who smiled deviously. "A scorned lover talking to a current lover. Kinky" she said.
"Kinky? What do you think this is a TV show? They were probably talking about the scheduling conflicts that you left Wilson with." I said but that didn't make her smile fade. In fact it only made it spread to Meredith who looked at me the same way.
I shook my head and started on my muffin when I heard someone sit down in the chair next to me and bang their head on the table. I look over to see Jo who is hunched over with her forehead resting on the table and her arms dangling to the sides. "Seven hours and a dozen arguments but I got the board figured out. On the bright side after four this evening there should be one less little boy with a compressed chest." She looked up at me " the surgery is at 11 and please tell me you will be done by four."
"Baring any complications we should be done by three." I smiled. "Hey are you-?"
"Shhhh... no fighting" she said interrupting me "I have a pounding headache and 5 hours of paperwork to do and then a 6 hour surgery. Rest now, talk later okay?"
"Okay." I said handing her a granola bar which she snatched from me before giving me a quick kiss.
"Hey so what were you and Blondie fighting about in the hallway earlier?" Christina said eating the last of her eggs.
" Oh yeah she went a little crazy when I postponed her surgery. She started talking about Alex during his good ol' days and when I tried to shut that down she yelled at me to make sure that her surgery was today. I guess in her head people can bleed to death from open wounds as long as she's first or whatever." Jo finished speaking and looked up to see the confused and slightly shocked expressions coming from everyone at the table.
"I'm sorry I didn't mean it in a bad way I'm just tired." She backtracked.
She continued to look scared of the reaction she was going to get until Christina started clapping and Meredith started laughing.
"I like you more and more Hairball." Christina said.
" Alright Wilson lets go get you coffee before you say that to Izzie because then we can't save you." Mer giggled pulling both Christina and Jo up from the table.
I was just about to follow when I look up to see Izzie staring at me from the next table over. She glared at me in a way that said she heard everything.
