Declan and I did all of the fair games and he won me a giant penguin (teddy bears are so overrated) the only thing we haven’t done is go on the Ferris wheel. I was nervous I was never good with heights it’s always scared me. We sat down and the Ferris wheel started moving and I grabbed onto him a little. He chuckled and rubbed my back and said, “It’s okay, Rain.”
I looked back at him and asked, “Do you like me?”
He laughed, “I’ve always liked you, Rain.”
“I meant as more than a friend.”
Declan got really quiet and said, “I don’t want to talk about that.”
I looked at him and said, “Declan, I need to know.”
“Why, Rain? It’s not like you would even date me you have Spencer now why would you even want me?”
“I’m not dating Spencer.”
“Then why were you kissing him?”
“He kissed me! I didn’t kiss him!”
“Likely story.”
“It’s not a story it’s the truth!”
“And why should I believe anything you say?”
“Because I’m your best friend!”
We both sat in silence for what felt like hours but I knew that it had only been a few seconds. I looked up at him and said, “At least I thought I was. Lately I don’t know, I mean you don’t really treat me like I am.”
“You are my best friend, Rain…it’s just I don’t know lately it’s like I can see us being more than that…”
“I just don’t know if it will and I’m scared to risk our friendship.”
“But if we never risk anything then we will never know if anything could ever work out.”
“I got out of an abusive relationship a few months ago. I don’t know if I’m ready to get in a new relationship.”
“I know…and we can take things slow. I almost lost you Rain and I can’t bear the thought of that happening and us never trying to take this step.”
“Declan it’s just you’re my best friend I don’t know if this will work out.”
“You have Spencer, Rain, so it doesn’t matter I just want you to be happy.”
“What about your happiness?”
“I’m happy as long as you are.”
We were now at the top of the Ferris wheel and I looked around and muttered, “If I tried something not knowing what it means and you know it could mean nothing…would you let me do it?”
Declan gave me a puzzled look and said, “Okay.”
I looked over at him and sighed making my decision. I grabbed his head and pulled it to mine and lightly pressed my lips to his.
