Conner advised eating on the patio outside the burger joint to keep Delilah's new Honda from smelling like a deep fryer, but the evening was wintry and she wanted to eat indoors.

He took another sip of his Coke and kept it in his mouth, awaiting Delilah's next joke as she read from her decoy journal, the one she bought the day before because she didn't want to pick up her old journal from JR. "America has the largest and most powerful military presence on the planet, and they name things Little Birds and Walkie Talkies?"

Conner nodded, causing a soda pop tsunami in his mouth, a lackluster reaction that made Delilah melt in defeat.

He swallowed the Coke to speak. "You think we army folk haven't heard that one before?"

Delilah drew a line across the joke in her journal. "Could have sworn you'd get a kick out of that."

Conner took another drink, once again, keeping the liquid in his mouth.

She asked Conner if he was ready, and he said yes with a head nod.

"How about this one? 'Being a model is like opening a box of brand-new shoes: It's all plastic and anything that looks edible says Do Not Eat'".

Conner's throat jerked upwards in amusement, grabbing a napkin and bringing it to his mouth to avoid spitting on Delilah's steering wheel.

She turned to him and gasped as if Christmas morning was in front of her. "That one made you gag, so it's a keeper."
