Life with the McClains || Station Two

After a while, Keith slowly made his way into a kitchen. He glared over at Lance before turning away and plopping himself down at the large dining room table. Lance shivered slightly, dark blue, skin-tight fabric filling his mind yet again.

Maria eyed the two before shaking her head and placing a cold cut sandwich down in front of Keith. He muttered a quiet thanks before taking a small bite. Lance watched him curiously and turned back to his own food.

"Abuela?" the little girl from before wandered into the kitchen, tears running down her face, "Arey is being a meanie and not letting me play on the playground with him." Maria turned her gaze out the window above the sink and let out a sigh.

"Lance, will you go help, Sammy?" She asked. Lance nodded and stood up, following the little girl out the back door. Maria turned to look at Keith. "How are you holding up so far?" she asked kindly, "Is Lance being nice?"

Keith slowly looked up from his food and swallowed what he had in his mouth. After looking out the window to watch Lance playing with a little boy in the large backyard, he turned back to her with a small nod. Maria's smile only grew.

"Hey mama," a voice said from the doorway, footsteps coming into the room. Keith curiously looked over his shoulder to see a tired looking woman slouch into one of the barstools. Maria put her hands on her hips and shook her head.

"What have I told you about sleeping in this late?" the older woman let out a soft breath. Keith took a moment to take in the appearance of the younger woman. She was short, like her mother, and had dark curly brown hair that seemed to reach just past her shoulders. Of course, her skin tone was just as dark as the rest of the families making Keith feel like some sort of twisted Cinderella. There was no doubt she was beautiful.

"Nevermind that," Maria waved her arm, pulling Keith from his thoughts, "make a good impression!"

The woman seemed to perk up at that and turned around to look around the room, her eyes landing on the boy sitting at the table a few feet from here. "That was today?" she asked to herself, her eyebrows raised slightly. She smiled lightly and rested her arm on the back of the tall stool. Keith fidgeted under her gaze.

"Howdy," she said simply, raising her hand slightly, "it's nice to meet you. The name's Alex," Keith smiled back shyly.

"Keith."

"See Ma?" Alex turned back around to face her mother, a cocky grin that reminded Keith of Lance's spread across her face, "Keith doesn't care." Maria sighed.

"This is no way to welcome a guest," she pressed.

Alex opened her mouth to say something but the front door closing caused her to fall into silence. "I'm back!" a male's voice called through the house followed by a tall man walking into the room with arms full of plastic grocery sacks. He stopped when he noticed Keith at the table.

"Did you get the M&Ms?" Alex asked blankly. The man turned his head slightly towards her and nodded, his eyes never once leaving Keith. "Oh, yeah. That's the new kid, Keith." Suddenly a grin erupted on his face.

"I was going to go introduce myself as soon as I dropped off the groceries," he informed the dark-haired female, "but since you're already down here, it saves me the trouble." He set the bags down on the counter and pecked a quick kiss to Maria's temple before walking over to Keith.

"My names Markos," he grinned and held a hand out to the teen, "but you are welcome to call me Mark." Keith nodded and took the other's hand. Mark grinned and gave it a firm shake before pulling away. He dropped a bag of M&Ms down on the counter in front of Alex and turned back towards Maria.
