Prologue:
I had been told to never speak of them again. The Shinies and the Shadows. My parents had told me that the stories frightened others. When I was smaller, the stories had been endearing but when I hit ten, the stories became more serious; things about how the Shinies and Shadows hated each other, how they were at war at all times. But even though I had been told it was just my imagination many times before, I still saw them. They lived in a completely different dimension, but the wall was very thin between us and them. Not even much of a wall really, more like a veil, just thick enough to keep us apart. But there were the few Shinies and Shadows that knew how to get through the wall and whisper things into the humans ears. Most people didn't see them though, only the person's reaction showed that the Shadows and Shinies were with them. It happened to everyone, it was like the Angel and Devil on your shoulder telling you what to do kind of thing. The Shinies and Shadows weren't their own person though. They were the biggest parts of the soul of people in my current dimension. Mine was a Shiny, I had seen her before. But some of the adults and children that I knew were Shadows instead. I didn't know how they were classified really. Maybe by how much evil was in the soul. One of my more constant Shiny friends, Caroline, appeared by my side in her usual state. Her hair, short and the color of autumn. Her eyes, blue as the sky. "Princess Desmia," Caroline whispered urgently. I threw her a quick glance that said 'can this please wait?' When I turned away from Caroline, my mother glared at me and I cringed. I couldn't help it. My best friend looked at me. "Shiny?" he mouthed at me and I gave one nod. He nodded and turned back. Caroline tried to get my attention again. I tried my best to ignore her. Finally, she sighed, and disappeared. About an hour later, I was back in my room.
"What did the Shiny want?" Andrew asked, I shrugged my shoulders in response.
Just then my mother burst through the door. "Desmia, we need a word." she said slowly. I nodded and stood up. I looked back at Andrew once and then I walked into the hall with Mother. She led me down the familiar corridors of the palace, her shoes clicking against the stone, echoing around us. We finally reached my mother and father's bedroom chamber. My father was standing in the middle of the room, waiting for us. "What was that about earlier?" my mother started to sound angry. I flinched.
"I can't control it, the Sh--"I began, only to be cut off.
"Don't even think of saying that word, Desmia." Mother said.
"But it's true!" I insisted, even though I knew it was no use. Caroline appeared beside me again.
"Can I please get you out of here?" Caroline asked in exasperation.
"No," I said turning to her. My mother's eyes widened.
"What are you saying 'no' to?" she asks.
"The Shiny!" I blurt out before she can cut me off again.
"You are beginning to test my patience, Desmia." she said in a low voice.
"That's it. I can't stand this, Mia." Caroline said, waving her hand to open a portal.
"Stop it, Caroline." I said, panicked. The portal glowed blue, pulsing with light.
"Come with me, I'll take you to your kingdom there, where you have nice and kind parents who believe what you say." Caroline said, persuasively. She tugged on my hand and I could feel myself drawn towards the warmth of the light, like moth to a flame.
"I can't just leave Andrew!" I say, beginning to feel scared. Caroline looks at me with her wide blue eyes.
"You'll see him again, Mia. Trust me, it will only be for a little. We'll come back soon." she says with nothing but honesty in her eyes.
"But what about--" I start to say but she tugs on my arm again and we're being sucked down, down, down... Into the dimension that I have never clearly seen.
"Desmia!" My mother and father scream in utter horror and I watch as they lean towards me to pull me back into their world, my world, but they're far too late. I'm gone before they can reach my hand.
