**Desmia**
One doesn't question what they have until they have lost it. For instance, I never thought to question the warmth of the sun kissing my skin, not once did I think I would never see the dark sky with all of it's beautiful lights and the moon ever again. But it has been eight long years since I have first entered the realm or dimension of the Shadows and the Shinies. I know this day to be my birthday, marking me eighteen years of age. Today, if I were in my own dimension, I would be marrying and taking the throne as the rightful queen. I would be readying for my coronation at this very moment, I would feel the warmth of rushing water, scrubbing off the dirt on my back, I would feel the softness of satin slipping over my skin. The feeling of a brush being pulled through each of my individual curls, making them shine. I tried to look out the window, get a glimpse of the sun. But it was of no use, the sun was covered by clouds that meant the war was still raging on, the Shadows and the Shinies were still quarrelling after all this time. Someone's eyes were peeking through the door, watching me as they did nearly every day. I knew that it was a man, I just couldn't fathom who would be watching me waste away in this wretched place. Today, I felt something different was about to happen. I walked over to my cot and lay down on it, sighing deeply. I was right, as I closed my eyes, I heard the latch open on the door, someone stepped in, leaving the door open. They walked silently over to me and caressed my cheek lightly. I slowly opened my eyes to see a handsome man leaning over me. "Who are you and why have you been watching me?" I ask.
"I am Caroline's brother, I am a Shiny though." he said and as I grasped his hand I could feel it, he was telling the truth. Before I could speak he pressed his lips fiercely to mine, he ran his hands through my hair and down my back. His fingers left small tingles where he touched, creating small trails. He deepened the kiss and I ran my fingers down his chest, finding where he hid the key with success. I clutched it in my palm and he picked me up and pressed me up against the wall next to the door, 'Perfect,' I thought to myself as he began to leave trails of kisses up and down my neck. I ran a hand through his hair and he sighed against the hollow of my throat. I pried myself away from him and smiled sadly.
"Maybe one day, but not today." I said to him as I held up the small silver key. I dashed out of the room quickly, locking him in.
"Desmia! Come back here and let me out this instant!" he yelled after me and I giggled as I rounded the corner. Next step, find Andrew and release him before I went anywhere else. I extended my mind and searched the passageways that I could find. I made my way hurriedly to where I could feel Andrew's light pulsing and waning. I finally found the door and turned the key until I heard the lock click. It must be a magic key. It fit into every lock. Andrew was trying to find a light to draw energy from and I ran over to him and intertwined our fingers. A radiant smile spread across both our faces and I leaned my forehead against his gently. He gazed into my eyes and I gave him a kiss.
"I will come back soon, and we'll end this war together. Wait for me, Andrew." I whispered. He nodded and we both walked out of his cell together. We went through the castle, trying to find our way out. We watched out for Caroline and luckily she was no where to be seen yet. Andrew led me through the forest until we reached the meadow that I had come to when I first arrived. It looked somewhat darker, but it was still beautiful. There was something I never noticed before, it was a small pond where the brook let out. It was completely still even though there was water falling into it. It looked like glass the way it didn't move. Andrew looked at me.
"This is the way to get back," Andrew says pointing to the iron colored pool. Caroline had told me this myth many times before, I didn't know I would need it though. A long time ago, the Shinies and the Shadows had joined forces so they could defeat an enemy bigger than their hatred for each other. Women and children stayed at home, worried sick about their husbands, brothers, and fathers. When a family member or a friend of them died they came here and let the grief take over. They sobbed and cried until they felt better. And all of the sparkling and glistening tears that fell from their eyes, joined together to make first a puddle and then a pond. People still came here to cry and be alone, there were stories that it was a portal to the other dimension; but no one had come back to prove the theory right or wrong, as far as the myth was concerned. I nod and look into his eyes.
"I swear, I will." I whispered back. With that, he let go of my hand and I walked into the portal. The palace loomed in front of me, making me feel like a small child again. "Home," I whispered as the sun embraced my skin like an old friend. I sighed and closed my eyes for a little.

The palace was just as I remembered, I made my way to the secret passageway that led to my parent's room. I knew my mother would be in there. I heard nothing but silence but as I stepped into the room I saw Mother sitting on her bed. "Mom!" I say as I run over to her. She looks at me.
"Desmia?" she asks hesitantly.
"Yes, I'm back and I missed you so much!" I said as a few tears ran down my cheeks.
"How do I know you aren't an impostor?" my mother asked me with a doubtful look on her face.
"Because I can tell you exactly what happened the day that I disappeared." I told her. She looked at my expectantly. "Earlier in the day I had appeared to be talking to myself and so later you came to my room and said that you needed a word. We came to this exact room and my friend, Caroline, got upset that you didn't believe that the Shinies and Shadows were real so she opened a blue portal and took me into it." I recalled. My mother threw her arms around me.
"It really is you." she breathed and I nodded. She stepped back to take a look at me. "You've grown so much." she mused.
"Where's Andrew?" I asked anxiously. I needed and wanted to see him.
"I think he's in the garden wi--" before she could say the rest I was out of the room. I practically ran out of the palace and into the garden that I used to play in almost every day. I heard the sound of a girl's giggle and then I heard a boy voice. I quickly made my way towards it and found him. But he wasn't alone. A girl with long brown hair stood next to him, and he leaned down to kiss her.
"No." I whispered. It couldn't be. There was no way that this was happening. The girl broke away and saw me. As she turned to face me, all I could feel was a sense of shock. She looked nearly identical to me. Andrew turned his head and he too, looked shocked.
"Desmia?" he whispered uncertainly. I nodded yes slowly. The girl looked up at his face, she held his hand a little tighter and when she looked back at me, her stare was cold and defensive. As if I were a threat.
"Who is she?" I asked in a strong voice even though on the inside I was no where near strong.
"Her name is Serena." he said.
"Why is she here and why does she look exactly like me?" I prodded.
"She has been being the princess for eight years. She looks like you because we couldn't let anyone else find out that you were missing." he summarized.
"So what will happen now that I have returned?" I asked.
"I'm not completely sure, but my best guess is that you will be briefed on how to be a warrior queen, Serena will be able to stay here since she's paid the kingdom or queendom, in your case, a great service." he said. "Let's go ask the queen."
As we walked away from the garden, Serena stood next to me behind Andrew. "He's mine, don't even think about taking him away." she whispered in my ear. I looked at her and she had a cruel look in her eyes that told me she was jealous. She didn't want to lose him.
