Ninth Beat

"Ri, baby, you're not gonna have a niece or nephew yet. We're too young for that," Richard replied when Maine couldn't respond.

"Okay," Riley said and went back to her seat.

As if that wasn't enough, Richard whispered to her, "Unless you want us to."

This is a fucking nightmare, she thought. Someone please call me.

Her prayer was answered almost immediately. Her phone started ringing. It was a call from one of her girlfriends.

"Who's that?" Richard asked.

"It's J. Please excuse me."

"Hello?" Maine said when she got out of the restaurant.

"Hi babe!"

"Who is this exactly?" she asked.

"Hay, Maine. You're getting malilimutin na. It's me, Katrina! We met at the bar?"

Her name didn't ring a bell. "Oh!  I remember now. What do you want?"

"You," the girl replied in a sexy voice.

Oh god if only I didn't agree with Richard, Maine thought.

"I'm sorry, but you can't have me. I'm with someone else at the moment. And please don't call me again. Bye," she ended the call and went back inside.

"Is everything all right?" Richard asked when she sat beside him again.

"Yeah," Maine replied.

They continued eating and after a few minutes more, they were done. It was time for his dad to go back to his work.

"It was nice meeting you Maine," his dad said.

"And I'm glad to meet you too, Mr. Faulkerson," she replied.

"Nako, papa nalang. Mukhang magtatagal kayo nitong anak ko eh," his dad joked.

Maine laughed nervously.

"Mama narin ang itawag mo sakin, Maine," his mom said. "At gusto ko ng apo ha," she winked.

Ano ba 'tong pinasok kooo, Maine thought.

"Bye Kuya! Bye Ate Maine!" Riely said. Both of them said goodbye too and proceeded to the car.

"I didn't even know mama liked bands and stuff," he said once they got in.

"You do now," Maine replied.

"So what are we gonna do now?" Maine asked and started the engine.

"I hope you're not afraid of heights," he smirked then drove away.
