Skin walkers are closely related in lore to the windigo but this legend comes from Navajo folk tales the Skin Walker is a witch that was usually a medicine man or woman that has become corrupt. The skin walker can change form and possess animals and humans although they are usually portrayed as coyotes or other animals associated with bad omens and death.
