The Way We Get By

Stranger Danger!

Just before the four godly men reached the top of the stairs, I darted off to the only other room left in the house that I knew had a lock on it. The bathroom.

I slid into the bathroom on my knees, just leaving myself enough time to lean up and put the lock on the door before anyone reached it.

The footsteps that had been following us upstairs had stopped, and all that I could hear was what almost sounded like, sniffing?

Why are they sniffing?

Then all four footsteps started walking towards my room, where Yashika was holding herself captive.

I could hear a lot of banging and Yashika shouting a lot of profanities at the men, before there was a loud crash and  a final scream.

My heart stopped. What if they killed her. My best friend, my only friend. I can't lose her, she's all I have left.

I couldn't stop the tears that started to fall freely as I lay curled up on the cold tiled bathroom floor. Thist was it, I'd finally given up.

Just before my hand reached up to the bathroom lock to give myself up, I heard the most amazing sound I could ever wish to hear.

"If you don't take your fucking hands off my ass right now, you're gonna have one less paw to hold anything with, boy!"

Although the scream was filled with violent threats and profanities, I knew that she was okay, they hadn't hurt her. Not that I could say the same for the guy holding her, he seemed to be just giving out loud and somewhat pain filled grunts.

I couldn't prevent the laughter that escaped my mouth. That's when all sound stopped and I knew in that moment, I fucked up.

"Fuck Tanya!"

Yeps even Yashika knew how much I had royally messed up right now. I could hear the heavy footsteps coming towards my once safe hiding space.

"Come on out little mate, there's now where left for you to go."

I had to laugh at the fact that he actually thought I was just gonna come out of here, I might be shy and a little awkward but I'm definitely not stupid enough to come out of my safe place.

Yashika's POV

Once Tanya and I were safely inside her house I knew exactly what needed to be done.

"TVD?"

Tanya looked at me and started to laugh hysterically rolling on the floor of her hall.

At first I just thought she genuinely found what I said funny, until I realized. My best friend's having a mental breakdown.

This poor girl has been through so much, first her dad dying and having to watch that! I can't even imagine what it must have been like to sit there and know there is nothing you can do to save one man you know you can always trust, your best friend when no one else is around.

Tanya was definitely daddy's girl, she looked up to him so much, he was her inspiration and when he died, it was like something inside her died with him. She became withdrawn, secluded and awkward.

I remember the week after his funeral she refused to leave her room for two weeks straight, she wouldn't let anyone in.

I being the amazing best friend I am eventually thought of climbing through her bedroom window. Thank you wall plant.

Seeing her in that way scared me. She was depressed and lost weight from not eating properly and her eyes.

They were almost lifeless.

How do you help a girl that's broken no matter whar I said, I knew nothing could make her better, the only person who could do that was gone.

I spent the next three weeks art Tanya's house, we mostly just sat and she cried on my shoulder whilst I rubbed her back and tried to hold back the tears for the loss my best friend was enduring.

Tanya eventually learned to cope with her loss. Even if it wasn't in the best way. She pushed all of her feelings to the back of her mind and put on a smile that could fool everyone. That was Tanya's way of coping and if that's what helped I wasn't going to stop her. She know that if she ever needed someone I would be there.
