Maxine Mayfield moved to Castle Rock from California with her mother to get away from an abusive relationship in which her parents had. She now lives in a small, beat up home trying to do everything she can to make her life as normal as it can be again. With her mother working a full time and a part time job, she is usually left home alone and walking around town just to stay out of the house for awhile.

Chris Chambers' life wasn't too great either. With a drunk for a father, a delinquent older brother, and wherever his mother was, everyone in Castle Rock knew that Chris would end up the same way too, and so did Chris. But in reality, he really was a kind, caring young boy and would never end up like his father and brother, but no one believed it except for his friends.

Gordie Lachance was a soft spoken, intelligent boy. He was Chris Chambers' best friend since he could remember. Unfortunately, his older brother, Denny, died in a jeep accident back in April, and his parents still haven't gotten over it, which turned him invisible. He was extremely talented in writing, everyone encouraged him to become an author one day, except his father.

Teddy Duchamp was the craziest person you'd ever meet. He was always either trying to start a fight, spitting out insults to his good friend, Vern Tessio, or just endlessly speaking in general. His home life was okay, except for the fact that his father was taken to a mental hospital for sticking Teddy's ear to a stove and almost burning it off. Yet, he still loved and respected his father dearly.

Vern Tessio was the worrisome, innocent chubby friend in their group. He had a big appetite all the time, but so was his heart. since being very gullible, he was picked and teased on a lot by his friends; especially Teddy. His friends were the only people who kept him going, made him brave, and he was grateful for all of them, even Teddy.
