"Lollipop lollipop Oh lolli lolli lolli,

lollipop, lollipop Oh lolli lolli lolli,

lollipop, lollipop Oh lolli lolli lolli, lollipop!"

Vern and Teddy sang as they shuffled side by side. They were way up ahead, dancing and singing as they went, and Chris, Gordie, and Max trailed behind.

"Hey, I got some Winston's," Chris said, breaking the silence, "I got them off my old man's dresser. A piece for after supper."

"Yeah, that's cool," Gordie muttered.

"Yeah, it's when a cigarette tastes best, after supper," Chris replied. Gordie seemed a bit off, he wasn't as enthusiastic as he usually was, and his head was hung low.

"What's up Gordo?" Max asked, noticing his behavior. Gordie looked up at both Chris and Max, and asked,

"Do you think I'm weird?" Max shook her head no, but Chris said,

"Definitely."

"No man, seriously," Gordie said, stopping Max and Chris, "Am I weird?"

"Yeah, but so what? Everybody's weird," Chris replied. They all went silent again started walking.

"You ready for school?" Chris asked.

"No," Gordie and Max said at the same time.

"High school," Chris said, "You know what that means, this year we'll be split up."

"What do you mean we'll be split up?" Max asked.

"Yeah, what are you talking about, why would that happen?" Gordie added.

"It's not gonna be like grammar school that's why, you guys will be taking your college courses, well me, Teddy and Vern will be in the shop courses with the rest of the retards making ashtrays and birdhouses. You're gonna meet a lot of new guys, smart guys," Chris said.

"We'll meet a lot of pussies if that's what you mean," Gordie said.

"Yeah, there's no way in hell I'm going to be in the smart kid classes," Max mumbled.

"No man, don't say that, don't even think that!" Chris exclaimed, pointing at Gordie.

"I'm not going with a bunch of pussies, forget it!" Gordie finished.

"Well then you're an asshole!" Chris said.

"What's asshole about wanting to be with your friends?!" Gordie exclaimed.

"It's asshole if your friends drag you down!" Chris shouted, "You hang with us, you'll just be another wise guy with shit for brains!"

"He's right Gordie, make us proud and take the college courses," Max added.

"You mean you're not taking them either?" Chris said.

"God no, I'd do one semester and fail instantly. I'm too dumb to do anything," Max replied.

"You're not too dumb!" Gordie exclaimed.

"And neither are you Gordie!" Chris said, "Look, you could be a real writer someday Gordie-"

"Fuck the writing! I don't wanna be a writer! It's stupid, it's a stupid waste of time!" Gordie shouted.

"That's your dad talking," Chris said.

"Bullshit!"

"Bull true! I know how you dad feels about you, he doesn't give a shit about you! Denny's the one who cared, and don't tell me different!" Chris shouted. Max wondered who Denny was, but she didn't think it was a good time to ask.
