"Are we there yet? We've been walking for forever," Max whined. Gordie had been taking her to meet his friends, and she was getting tired with all the walking. Gordie suddenly stopped and pointed to a small tree house.
"we're here! Isn't it great? We found it abandoned and just had to claim it as ours. Come on, let's go!" Gordie exclaimed. Max was truly amazed by the tree house. It wasn't much, but she had never seen one in real life, she'd only seen them on T.V. shows.
"Are you coming?" Gordie called. Max must've started day dreaming, because he was already at the ladder leading up to the entrance. Max nodded and ran up next to Gordie, and watched as he climbed up and knocked a special way. Seconds later the hatch opened and up Gordie went. Max quickly followed, and sat next to Gordie.
"Guys, this is the new girl we've heard about, her name's Max. Max this is Teddy," Gordie said pointing to the boy next to her. He had longer dirty blonde hair, and very thick black glasses. it had also looked like something had happened to his left ear, but she wouldn't say anything about that yet.
"Hello madame, I've been waiting to meet you," Teddy said with a big, flirtatious grin. Max gave a simple awkward smile in return.
"And this is Chris," Gordie said pointing to the right of him. When she looked over, she felt her eyes grow wide and her heart beat ten times faster. He was this beautiful boy, he had short blonde hair, crystal blue eyes, and his body was well toned. he had a cigarette hanging from his mouth and he gave a head nod.
"Hey, it's nice to finally meet you," Chris said. Max swallowed hard and choked out,
"H-hi." She nervously looked down and her cheeks turned red.
"Hey Gordo, where did ya find her?" Teddy asked. Teddy and Chris had been playing a card game before the two came in, so Gordie grabbed a hand and they continued.
"Found her getting picked on by Ace and Eyeball, I pretended like she was with me and I got her outta there pretty quick," Gordie replied.
"Those bastards," Teddy muttered and went back to his game.
"Hey, how do you know if a French man has been in your backyard?" Chris asked.
"I'm French okay?" Teddy said, sounding offended.
"Your garbage cans are empty and your dog's pregnant," Chris answered. Chris, Gordie and Max laughed and Teddy looked annoyed.
"Didn't I just say I was French?" Teddy said. Max rolled her eyes and watched Chris, Gordie and Teddy play their game. Chris knocked on their little table and said,
"I knock." Teddy mumbled 'shit' under his breath and laid down his cards.
"twenty nine," Chris said.
"I got twenty two," Teddy replied sadly. Gordie threw his cards and exclaimed,
"Piss up a rope!" Teddy and Chris laughed hysterically and Max chuckled to herself. As Gordie grabbed for a magazine Teddy said,
"Gordie's out! Ole Gordie just bit the bag and stepped out the door!"
"Come on man, deal," Chris said to Teddy, "Hey Max, why don't you try?" he asked. Max sat up straight and fiddled with a strand of her long red hair.
"Oh no, I-I don't know what you guys are playing, and I'd rather watch." Chris looked at her kindly and replied,
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I'm sure. Maybe another day though," Max said and leaned on the wall of the tree house. After maybe only a minute of playing Teddy knocked on the table.
"I knock." Chris looked up and exclaimed,
"You four-eyed pile of shit!"
"Pile of shit has a thousand eyes," Teddy snickered. Chris looked at Gordie and Max and the three laughed.
"What? What's so funny? Come on, I've got thirty what have you got?" Teddy asked. Chris looked at his cards and said,
"Sixteen." Chris kept on laughing as Teddy was taunting,
"Go ahead, keep laughing, You've gotten you ride pal." Suddenly, a knock came from the bottom of the tree house.
"That's not the secret knock," Gordie said not looking up from his magazine.
"I forget the secret knock! Let me in!" The voice said. The three boys looked at each other and said,
"Vern," and dragged out his name.
"Who's Vern?" Max asked.
"He's one of us. Don't worry, he won't do anything to ya," Chris reassured Max.
"He couldn't even if he tried," Teddy said making himself laugh. Teddy and Chris moved the table to open the hatch as Vern called again,
"Come on guys, open up!" They opened the hatch and up came a round boy with short dark hair and a striped polo shirt.
"Oh man guys, you are not gonna believe this- oh uh, h-hi" Vern was just about to tell everybody something until he saw Max in the tree house.
"Vern this is Max, Max this is Vern. This is the new girl we've heard about," Gordie said introducing us.
"Hey," Max said and smiled gently at Vern. Vern's face went pink and he replied,
"Yeah-uh hi. Anyway, this is so boss, oh man, wait till ya hear this! you won't believe it, it's unbelievable, wait until I catch my breath, I ran all the way from my house." All of a sudden, Chris, Teddy and Gordie started singing,
"I ran all the way home! Just to say I'm sorry!"
Vern crossed his arms and said,
"Okay, forget it, I don't have to tell you nothing!" Chris then stopped Teddy and Gordie from singing and he looked over at Vern.
"Alright you guys hold on, what is it man?" Vern's face then lit up and he said,
"Okay great, you won't believe this, sincerely-" Vern was then interrupted when the three started singing again. Max rolled over with laughter, which Chris caught a glimpse of, and Vern looked beyond irritated.
"Screw you guys!" He yelled. The three finally calmed down and Chris asked,
"What is it?"
"Can you guys camp out tonight? I mean if you tell your folks that you're gonna tent out in my back field?" Vern asked.
"Yeah," Chris replied while dealing out cards to him and Teddy, "I think so, except my dad's kinda on a mean streak, you know he's been drinking a lot lately." Hearing that crushed Max's heart, she felt terrible that that was going on in Chris' household, he was too kind to deserve it.
"You've got to man, sincerely! You won't believe this!" Vern exclaimed, "Can you Gordie?"
"Yeah, probably, " Gordie replied still looking at his magazine.
"So what are you pissin' and moanin' about, Verno?" Teddy asked impatiently.
"Yeah Vern, what's up?" Max asked.
"I knock," Chris said while knocking on the table. Teddy looked up at him and exclaimed,
"What?! You liar, you ain't got no pat hand!" Chris just kept laughing to himself and Max smirked.
"Make your draw, shit-heap," Chris laughed.
"You guys wanna go see a dead body?"
