CARTER (CHAPTER 15)

"Are you sure you're fine?" I ask Taylor once more, seeing as she still continues to cough.

"I'm fine," she says with a cough, her eyes now tearing up.

"I can't believe you choked on those balls," I mutter with a laugh.

"They're not balls!" she shouts, "They're tapioca balls!" she coughs out loud, handing me the drink.

"And how did you choke on it again?" I ask her, seeing as she angrily stares right at me, probably not the right moment to be asking her idiotic questions. "Got it," I mouth.

"I'll be fine," she mutters, patting her chest.

"I know," I tell her. "I just think you need to know how to drink properly, cause this," I motion at her drink in my hands. "Is a fucking hazard to you." She laughs, shaking her head as she begins to cough.

"Shut up," she tells me.

"You sure you're okay?" She nods, grabbing her drink out of my hands and taking a sip out of it. "I'm fine," she waves away, continuing to drink.

"If you say so," I mumble. "And you like this crap?" I ask, pointing at the drink.

"Well duh," she says slowly, holding the drink close to her as if it were some precious thing.

"But you almost died!" I point out.

"Choked. Different." I scoff, rolling my eyes. "Plus, don't start yelling at me as if this was my fault."

"Then whose fault was it?"

"Yours!"

Now I choke on the damn ball.

"What?" I cough out loud, hitting my chest.

"It was your fault I choked on a tapioca ball!" I hear her say.

"How is it my fault?!" I shout in confusion, wanting a valid answer from her as to why she thinks her choking on a stupid jelly ball is my fault.

"It just is!" she shouts back as well, putting her hands up in anger. "You choked me!" My eyes widen as I take in her words.

With a chuckle, I say, "You might wanna rethink those words, Taylor."

"Argh, you know what I mean," she groans, slapping her forehead. "Look, you can't tell a girl that she's "different" and "real" just because I'm not your normal date," she scoffs, drinking her tea.

I give a dry laugh, looking down on the ground as I rub my eyes, feeling the hint of frustration from Taylor's words.

"I don't fucking get you," I mutter angrily, lifting my head as I look right into her eyes. I see her look taken aback from my words as well, now seeing the hint of anger on my face and defeat. "I'm trying to do something nice here can't you see?" She raises an eyebrow, yet I continue. "I asked you out didn't I?" I say, using my fingers as I count. "I paid for the silly tea that you somehow choked on," I rolled my eyes. "And now that I'm trying to be an actual gentleman, it seems to me that you're pushing me away," I sigh.

"Wha-what?" she stutters. "I am not pushing you away," she strictly says, acting all defensive. "I'm just..."

"Crazy," I mutter.

She chuckles, crossing her arms. "What?"

"Nothing," I quickly say, knowing for sure that she clearly heard what I said.

"Look," she bites her lip, trying her best to not look at me, yet that doesn't work at all. Her eyes still land right on me. "I'm not pushing away."
