CARTER (CHAPTER 60)
"You're fucking crazy dude. Completely out of your mind," Jack mutters, looking at the rings on display.
"I've been waiting for this moment my entire life Jack. I love her," I tell him, staring closely at the engagement rings.
"Once you propose though, it all turns into shit."
"What are you talking about?"
"Claire is going to see you proposing and now she'll expect me to do it as well!" I laugh at his words, shaking my head.
"Dude, you've only been with Claire for like a year. I don't think she'll be expecting a proposal from you any time soon."
"I guess you're right about that. But what about you?"
"What about me?"
"You've been with Taylor for like less than a year, she left to go to Paris, came back like a week ago, and you guys only had sex. That wasn't a long time Carter."
"And? I can't propose to the girl I love?" I say in anger.
"Dude, calm down. I'm just saying that maybe you're rushing into this whole "marrying her" idea a little bit fast. I mean, does she even want a proposal now? What if she says no? What then?"
"Don't fucking say that or else you're gonna jinx it," I muttered, running my fingers through my hair in stress.
"Damn alright," Jack says with a sigh.
"Do you men need any help around here?" I look up, staring at a girl around my age.
"Oh yeah, I'm thinking of proposing to my girlfriend, and I wonder what's the best engagement ring you got here."
"Meaning what's the most expensive one you got here," Jack says in laughter. I flip him off, shutting him off.
"You want to propose to her?"
"Well, I'm kind of thinking about it. But yeah."
"Stop lying. He's gonna propose to her. Can't you see it? The guy's in love!"
"Shut up Jack," I mumble, elbowing him on his side. "Look, just show me the most expensive ring you got alright? I really love this girl and I want her to have the best ring in the whole entire world."
"No problem sir. Just give me a second alright?" I nod, motioning her to find the ring.
"Well, that was fun right?" Jack says in amusement. I scowl at him, hitting the back of his head.
"Geez, you're mad," he says, rubbing the spot of where I hit him.
"Yeah well, you're making me mad. Why the hell did I even bring you."
"Because Chris lives in Miami, which is a three-hour drive here. So, you brought me instead because I for one, am your cousin, and I also only live like twenty minutes away. So yeah, there's your answer."
"Shut up."
"Look, do you really wanna do this? Do you really wanna propose to the girl you broke up with five years ago, then got back together just a week ago because of sex?!"
"It was not just because of sex you dumbass."
"Then what was it? I mean you told me that she gave you this big speech of how she missed you the past five years and how she still loves you blah blah. To be honest, dude, that still doesn't make me understand as to why you want to propose to her."
"You don't get it alright? I love her. I can't seem to think of how my life would be without her again. As soon as I saw her, my feelings came rushing back and now there's no way I'm making her leave me again. She can't leave. Not again," I tell him sadly.
