“Marie!” Nicole yelled in my ear. She was so loud, I had to pull the phone away from my ear. “I haven’t talked to you in like forever! How’s everything going? You said you needed a favor?”

“Yeah, um, can I stay over tonight, and the night after that? I’m having some issues.” I said.

“Yeah, sure! You are my BFF. What kind of issues are you having?” She asked. I really didn’t feel like explaining everything over the phone.

“It’s a long story. I’ll tell you when I get there. Ok?” I said.

“Ok. See you soon.” She said. After I hung up, I started the car again and pulled onto the road. It wasn’t long until I got to Nicole’s house. I went inside and plopped down on her bed. Her hair was tired up and she was wearing lounge clothes, just like me.

“How’s it going? What are those issues you were talking about over the phone?” Nicole asked, sitting down in her computer chair. I folded my legs underneath me.

“Well there is a big secret I have to tell you.” I said. Nicole nodded. I continued. “Some things happened and I found out I was pregnant two months ago, right after prom.” I held my breath.

“Shut up! Oh my god! Marie, I’m so happy for you! This is so huge!” Nicole exclaimed. She calmed down a bit. “How did your parents take it?”

“That’s the thing. Me and Rocky told them today. Everyone took it as a surprise and then they were happy. Everyone except my dad. He ran of and I followed him. I confronted him, he recommended me, then hit me. Finally, he kicked me out because I was a “shame” to the family. That’s why I’m here.” I said.

“Oh gosh. This is bad. Listen, Marie. You can stay here as long as you want to. We’re sisters for life.” Nicole said. She got up and gave me a hug.

“Thank you so much. I’m so glad to hear that from you. At least someone cares.” I said.

“What about Rocky? Where is he?” Nicole asked. I hesitated. I wasn’t sure if me and Rocky broke up.

“Well, we had a fight because he didn’t defend me. I don’t know where he is now. I last saw him when I was leaving my house.”  I said.

“Oh.” Nicole said. “Well I’m pretty sure there was a reason he didn’t defend you. Everyone has a reason for something they have or haven’t done.”

“I don’t know, Nicole. I’m really tired. Can we pick up this conversation tomorrow morning?” I asked.

“We sure can. We’ll go to the café tomorrow morning and I’ll treat you and the little munchkin for some doughnuts or something.” She smiled.

“Thanks, Nicole.” I smiled back.

“Goodnight.”

“Night.”

In the morning, Nicole and I drove to the café. I got out of the car and adjusted my snug pink tee and my blue jeans. Nicole looked at her reflection and pulled down skirt. I checked out my reflection as well. My small baby bump was becoming more visible. I sighed as we made weaved our way through a uncommonly large crowd.

“How come there are so many people here today?” Nicole asked, bumping into a large man.

“I don’t know. This is weird.” I said. Someone elbowed me I the arm. “Ouch!”

“Excuse me! A girl with a baby is coming through!” Nicole shouted over the commotion of people. We finally made it to the café. The line inside was small and not that many people were seated. We ordered and sat down in out usual booth. There was a large applause from the crowd outside.

“I wonder what’s going on.” Nicole said, sipping her iced latte.

“Me too. Maybe some charity event.” I said, taking a big bite into my doughnut. The door to the café opened and I saw Katie, a good friend of ours, walk in.

“Hey! Marie! Nicole!” She shouted at us. I smiled.

“Hey, Katie. How’s it going?” I asked, taking another bite.

“It’s going good. What about you two?”

“We’re ok.” I said.

“Do you have any idea what’s going on outside?” Nicole asked. Katie shook her head.

“Nope. I just came in here to grab a coffee.” She said.

“Well please sit with us.” Nicole said. I nodded in agreement. Katie went to the counter and ordered. A few moments later, she was sitting with us.

“I really wanna know what’s going on. Maybe we should check it out when we’re done.” Nicole said.

“Ok.” I answered.
