Republic City: one year ago

"Officer down! I repeat, Shirogane, and Holt are down! Send help quickly!" Lin Beifong shouted into her radio. The crumbling remains of an apartment building smoked just yards away, but he focus was on the two dying young men in front of her. Keith came running from down the street. He had the police radio on earlier and heard the news.
More officers came to help un-bury Matt and Shiro, going as fast as they could. More cars and an ambulance arrived to assist them. Beifong stood their helpless as the help arrived. Slowly they uncovered the two younger officers. Matt had used his body to shield Shiro from most of the damage. But Shiro's right arm had been blown off at the bicep and he was loosing blood fast. Matt... he wasn't breathing. The paramedics loaded both boys up as the other officers continued to search for more benders in the rubble.
"Chief Beifong, there are no survivors." One officer told her. There was a group of people huddled to the side.
"They got everyone out." Beifong said. "Right now we need to focus on getting them checked out for minor injuries." She was trying to keep it together, her fists shaking.
"Yes ma'am." He said and ran to assist the other officers.
Keith ran up to Beifong, tears in his eyes. "Shiro, where is he? Are he and Matt okay?" He asked, starting to sob.
"Calm down kid." Beifong said, "they're both on their way to the hospital." She turned to the officer from before. "Hold down the fort here. I'm going to see how our boys are doing." She looked back at Keith. "I'm going to take you with me. Get in my car and we'll see them together." Keith nodded and did as Beifong told him. He got in the car and got his seatbelt on. Thoughts swirled in his mind. Were they okay? What happened? Were they still alive? He only cried more from it. Beifong followed shortly after. She got in and sped down the street, the sirens blaring so no one would be in the way. She stopped at in front of the hospital. Keith took the seatbelt off and practically jumped out of the car. He waited for Beifong to catch up with him as he held a necklace close to him, the same sword and dragon one. Beifong got out of the car. She led Keith inside.
"Chief Beifong!" The resectionist nearly jumped out of her seat. "T-the injured were just brought in... it's not..."
"I understand. Can we see them?" Beifong asked, trying to stay calm for Keith's sake.
"You can wait out side the room for the doctors to let you in. Down the hall first on the left." Was the nervous reply.
"Come on." Beifong led Keith that way and sat down with him on a bench outside the door. Behind Keith, he heard a familiar voice right before he was almost tackle hugged to the ground.
"P-Pidge?" He asked and saw that she had been crying too. He was about to ask what was wrong before he remembered that she and Matt are sibilings. "They'll be okay.." He said, uncertainty in his voice. The doctor came out of the door, there was blood on his gloves and coat. He saw Chief Beifong first looked her in the eyes and shoot his head.
"W-we lost one... I'm so sorry..." He stammered.
"Y-you did what you could..." was beifong's short reply. She felt tears start to form in her eyes. Both of those boys were too young... too young for this.
"N-no..." Pidge murmured and buried her head in Keith's chest. "They're both supposed to make it!"
Keith felt more tears fall as he rubbed Pidge's back.
"Who?" Beifong asked the doctor.
"Matt... Matt Holt." He replied. "We'll do what we can for Shirogane... but he won't be the same person you knew... just prepare yourselves..." Pidge cried harder into Keith's chest.
"He can't be dead! Matt can't be!" She cried. Keith choked back a sob and continued to rub her back.
"I'm so sorry Pidge.." He knew nothing he said would help her though.
A few nurses came through the door. They pushed a gurney with a sheet over it that was covering a deathly still human form. Beifong gritted her teeth, she turned to Keith and Pidge.
"Pidge, wait for your parents to get here." She said in a falsely calm voice. "Doctor, this young man is Shiro's brother. Surely he can stay by his side."
"Yes... he'll need some there when he wakes." The doctor said.
Keith stood up, holding Pidge in his arms. "Chief, Pidge is like our sister, she should be able to come with us." He pleaded.
Pidge wiggled in his grasp. "Keith, it's fine. I'll just wait for mom and dad to come get me."
"I'm so sorry..." was all Beifong could say to Pidge. "This shouldn't have happened..."
"I'll leave you with Shiro." The doctor said letting Keith into the room. "I'll be back soon to check on him. If he wakes up call us." He added before walking down the hall. Keith took a deep breath and walked into the hospital room. Hearing that Shiro was asleep put him at ease. He knew his brother would need the sleep after what happened eariler.
Beifong sighed, "I need to get back to the station. Will you be okay here on your own?" She asked Keith. Shiro was laying on his back, he was almost completely wrapped in bandages. What little was left of his right arm was wrapped up tight to keep it from bleeding more. There was a bandage across the bridge of his nose We're it had been cut deeply by a sharp piece of metal.
"Yeah, I'll be fine. When he wakes up, I'll get them to contact you." Keith said and sat in the chair next to his brother. "I hope you wake up soon, Shiro.."
Beifong nodded and left the room. Shiro stirred at the sound of Keith's voice, his eyes scrunching as his word became a blur of pain.
"K-Keith..."
Keith felt fresh tears form in his eyes as a tidal wave of relief washed over him. "Shiro! You're awake!" He saw a nurse passing by in the hallway. "Hey, tell them that Shiro's awake."
The nurse nodded and ran off. Shiro let out a pitiful sounding moan. Everything hurt. He opened his eyes and looked around. "M-Matt? Where is he... we... what happened?"
"You're at the hospital. Matt...he...he didn't...make it..." Keith said painfully. "I don't know the details, but you lost your right arm.."
Shiro's eyes widened, tears forming and cascading down his face. "N-no! He can't be dead! Please no!" He didn't care about his arm. How could Matt be dead? This couldn't be real. This has to a nightmare. "It can't be true! Keith please tell me it's not true!"
"I wish I could...we found him over you. He saved you, Shiro. I'm sorry. I wish I was there with you guys." Keith said. Yes i love it!!))
