"Earth to Kayla? Hello?" then the voice paused. "Fine, don't mind if I take one of your fries." and that was when Kayla was snapped back to reality as she slapped Gretchen's hand with furrowed brows. Gretchen grimaced in pain as she glared at her bestfriend.

No one takes away her food. Ever.

"Try me," Kayla challenged.

"You know I wouldn't because my efforts would be futile," she mumbled. "and painful." And that was when Kayla laughed her guts out. The previous experiences when Gretchen tried to snatch a fragment of Kayla's meal ended up having scratches on her arm. She didn't worry about the physical effects she would inflict on Gretchen because most likely she would do the same to her. Or even worse.

When it comes to food, it's a different story.

"Penny for your thoughts?" Gretchen wagered.

"How about two bars of brownies?" her eyes lit up as she absentmindedly licked her lips when she saw the lunch lady displayed a fresh batch on the counter.

Gretchen scowled. "You haven't even finished the one infront of you."

"So you'll buy if I finish it, eh?" She presumed. Kayla devoured her fries and cheeseburger in a span of five seconds before patting her stomach and giving Gretchen a satisfied smirk. On cue, her bestfriend stood up as she muttered profanities under her breath to buy her brownies.

Once Gretchen bought the sweet pastry, she shoved it to Kayla's chest which she gracefully caught. Kayla took no second in opening the paper bag and indulged in the chocolate-y goodness. She mentally moaned at the heavenly taste.

"Now speak," Gretchen snapped. "I can't stand how you're always in a daze." she stated worriedly.

Kayla darted her eyes downwards as she slowly chewed on the second piece. She felt her stomach drop as she suddenly lost the interest to munch on her sweets.

"It's just that. . ." Gretchen inched her face closer to Kayla, ready to hear out the concern of her bestfriend. "I have my period today that's why I'm emotional!" she covered her face in embarrassment as Gretchen just raised a brow in disbelief.

"Oh really?" Gretchen unbelievably asked as Kayla nodded her head. "Nice try, Robins, but we all know your period starts every last week of the month!" Gretchen accused. "and today's still the second week." she smirked in triumph as Kayla cursed under her breath. She really couldn't win over Gretchen's sharp memory.

"Fine! Dylan forgot to separate my white jeans yesterday from the colored ones and now it looked like it lost in a paint of war!" She huffed.

"Strike two," Gretchen shook her head. "Dylan and Ryan went to the amusement park the whole day yesterday which means that you had the house all to yourself!"

"Wait, how did you even know they weren't at home?" she crinkled her nose in curiosity of which Gretchen reacted with a blush.

"I, uh—that's not the point of our conversation here!" Gretchen said in exasperation. "I already gave you your brownies so speak, peasant!"

Kayla dramatically placed both palms on her face as she let out a deep breath. She banged her forehead on the cafeteria table as Gretchen anticipated her answer with narrowed eyes but out of concern.

Kayla turned her head sideways, resting one side of her face on her arm as she mumbled, "Over the weekend, we stumbled upon Brenton's friend at the cafe."

"And . . .?"

"A girl friend. They looked like they used to be very close buddies." Now she felt her face was on fire. She kept her words minimal and meek as ever as she felt her heart pounding.
