C H A P T E R N I N E

It was a cool, precipitating day for Kayla. The pattering drizzle made sounds that echoed throughout the streets. The cool wind kissed her skin softly as her cotton pullover gave her little amount of warmth. With an umbrella in hand, she exited her household and skidded her way to one of her favorites cafes situated near her neighborhood.

She went inside and the cool air conditioner welcomed her which gave her a slight shiver. She trudged her way to the counter as her eyes darted from right to left, silently reading the menu found above. After few minutes of having mental decisions, she settled and ordered a Chocolate Mint shake and of course, her ever forever favorite, red velvet cake.

She walked to a vacant table found in the farthest corner of the facility as she balanced the tray on her hands and the weight of her shoulder bag which contained knick knacks of school-related stuff.

She comfortably sat down and started to dispose the books, highlighters, papers, and pens from her bag. She flipped the pages of her History book as she highlighted important terms and definitions about World War I and II for an exam this coming week. She sipped her chocolate mint shake and took a spoonful of red velvet cake coated with rich, cream cheese frosting which made her taste buds tingle in delight.

She plugged in her headphones as she played her playlist which consisted of Shawn Mendes' songs. As she scanned her book and lip synced to I know what you did last summer, she felt her table wobble which made her eyes shot up to a familiar figure which screamed Brenton Abrams. He was wearing a plain white tee-shirt, faded jeans, and black Nike shoes.

She took one of her earphones out and displayed a casual smile to the guy who somehow just makes her insides happy. "Hey."

"Hi. What are you doing here?" he asked.

Kayla rolled her eyes at him as she holds out one hand, pointing at the messy books and works before her. Brenton lets out a casual 'Ah' as he nodded. After a silent pause, he fidgeted and would rub his knuckles from time to time which piqued Kayla's interest.

"Do you need something?" she asked.

Brenton looked hesitant but soon spoke. "I guess.. I need some help?" his face crinkled in embarrassment at the last phrase. His ears slightly went pink as Kayla stifled a giggle.

"Sure. What is it?"

"Can you tutor me?" he softly asked.

"Of course," she smiled. Somehow, her body was at peace knowing that Brenton was asking her. She didn't know why, but she had the feeling that he was slowly changing and adapting to her. "But where are your books and all?"

"They're in the car. Are you sure you're okay with tutoring me? I'm warning you, my knowledge level is beyond negative." he challenged playfully.

Kayla pretended to gasp as she dramatically placed a hand on her chest. "Are you judging my ability to teach, Mr. Abrams?"

Brenton smirked as traces of pink shades were evident on his cheeks. "Not at all, Ms. Robins. I'll be getting my books now. Just you wait here." he responded as he galloped his way to the exit.

Once he was gone, Kayla rested her jaw on the palm of her hand as her mind drifted away. She suddenly remembered the last incident she got in which involved her and discriminating comments of other students. She was fully aware that ever since she got involved with Brenton, she's been getting unwanted attention lately which she never ever dreamt of having. But thinking that she couldn't turn back time and avoid the first unfortunate meeting they had at the cafeteria at school, it would be pointless to stop now especially that both of them are warming up with each other.
