Hershel dismissed us, as they began to fill the empty grave only containing one stone and a few of Otis' belongings. I stayed outside with Shane until Mable laid down for her nap in the early afternoon. Something felt off between Shane and me, I almost felt bitter. Not at the fact that he'd killed someone, but the fact that it was our only way to survive now. Kill or be killed. I didn't want Shane to see me confused and upset, so I went up to Maggie's room to clear my head and be with her. "Here, I can find you something to change into." She said, giving me a disappointed look after I'd told her Mable was asleep, and couldn't play with the old toys she'd brought out of the attic. She opened a drawer and then paused, I heard her sniffle. "Maggie..." I said, walking over and putting my hand on her back. "Thank you for being there." She said, turning and hugging me. "I always will, promise," I said, smiling at her as she wiped her tears.
I walked out to see most of the group gathered in front of a map on the hood of the Wrangler. I walked over to hear them all talking about Sophia, looking for ways to find her. It'd been five days, the chances of finding her at this point were slim to none. "Merle n' I'll head out at first light. Head north and search along the river. I want the rest of y'all back here in case anything goes south." Daryl said, glancing at the map again before heading back towards his tent. Glenn folded the map and put it into his bag. He and Maggie had planned to make a run into town to get medicine for Carl and Theo. I heard Mable stirring nearby in the Wrangler and walked over to let her out. "There she is!" I said, picking Mable up and hugging her while she giggled. "Come on, let's go get some dinner."
After we finished eating, Mable decided she wanted to have a sleepover with 'Beff' and Maggie. I kissed her goodnight before she crawled upstairs to see the toys they'd found for her. I looked out the window and saw Shane leaning against the Wrangler in the fading light. "Where's Mable?" He asked, seeing me approaching empty-handed. "She's having a sleepover with the girls tonight. How are you?" I asked. "I'm fine." He breathed, staring off into the distance. "No, you're not. You watched someone die yesterday and you shaved off all your hair." His lip curled and he shook his head. "I didn't just watch..." He sighed. I took him into my arms, placing my forehead on his and looking deep into his dark eyes, "We will get through this."
We laid down in the back of the Wrangler and tried to sleep to no avail. After tossing and turning for what seemed like forever, we gave up and decided to go for a walk. I pulled one of Shane's oversized jackets and put it on before we traced the line where the field met the woods. I reached out and grabbed his hand, squeezing it as we continued to walk quietly. "I can't get it out of my head." He said, breaking the silence. "I can only imagine, especially everything we've been through the past few days," I said. "I couldn't let Carl die. I couldn't let you tell Mable that I'd died..." He said, his voice breaking. "Shane," I said, stopping and pulling him towards me, "You're safe now. Carl's okay." He took in a deep shaky breath, letting go of my hand. "I don't understand how you can look at me knowing what I've done. How do you not think I'm a monster?" He asked, tears welling in his eyes. "Because, we do what we have to and protect our family. It's not the same as it used to be, sometimes it's kill or be killed. Andrea and I were coming after you, and I would've done anything to get you and the supplies back safely." I said. He sucked in a deep breath through his nose, nodding his head. "I know it's hard, but you need to forgive yourself." I said, walking over and hugging him. "...or at least learn how to not let it keep you up at night." "The only thing I want to do is forget it happened for a little while." He replied. "Me too," I said, reaching up and kissing him. Something awoke inside of him as he pushed me up against a tree, kissing down my jaw towards my neck. His strong hands gripped my waist and pulled me into him. "Not here," I said, his hands trailed down. "Where?" He asked, his eyes narrowing.
I glanced back at the empty porch before hurrying into the shed that I'd found the glass beads in earlier. "Ain't this fancy?" Shane said, shutting the door behind us. He kissed me passionately, pushing me backward and pinning me to the wall. I hooked my finger into his waistband, pulling his hips into mine. He smiled against my lips, lifting my shirt over my head. There was a snap, and my bra fell to the ground. He spun me around an bent me over onto a workbench, tools and clutter fell noisily as he pressed himself into me while undoing his belt. I looked back into his eyes and smiled as I began to grind into him. "Come here," He said after a moment, turning me around and kissing me again. I undid the button on his jeans, tugged them down, and dropped to my knees. ...
"Damn, Hollie, I didn't think you had it in you," Shane growled as I fell onto the floor of the shed next to him, my chest heaving. "Me either." I breathed, laying my head on his chest and listening to his racing heartbeat. "I don't want to do this just to do this. I want you to know how much you mean to me." He said, tracing his fingers down my back. "I already do, I have since the day I met you," I said. "No harm in reminding you then." He said, smiling and kissing my forehead. "I guess that's fair enough," I said, pulling up my shorts and zipping up Shane's jacket over my bare chest. We returned to the Wrangler and quietly climbed in the back while Mable slept, falling asleep soon after our heads hit the pillows.
