Chapter 5- Summoning Demons

"Sorry I'm late class." Rin said, as we walked into the classroom.

"Why does she have a cat?" Harumi asked.

"That is not a cat, his name is Rokura. He is a cat spirit, something you, of all people, should know not to anger." Rin said. Harumi blushed and Haruki and Izumi snickered. "Cat spirits are different than most spirits. For them, the line between spirit and demon is very thin." Rin started to go on about spirits and demons.

Reika slid into the seat next to me.

"So, you're the one causing all the commotion. This is great, someone not totally in love with teach. I mean he's hot but it's stupid to fawn over someone. What do you think of the guys in our class? All of them are cute, so it's more of a preference. I kinda like Kazuma because he's the quiet, smart guy, mean but secretly soft kinda guy. Or there's Izumi, the goofy, sweet, little brother kinda guy. Or Haruki, the nice, hot, knight-in-shining-armor kinda guy. But the teach is so hard to read, especially since you got here. Oh, I bet you're wondering how Izumi got that scar. We all grew up at a temple in kyoto. And one day-"

"Misaki! Reika! Have you two even been listening?" Rin asked, sounding angry.

"Yes." I said instinctively.

"Then would one of you like to explain what a ghost is?" Rin asked.

Oh shit, I didn't know that.

"I know this...umm..." Reika mumbled.

"Misaki. Misaki." Rokura whispered in my ear. "A ghost is a demon that mimics a spirit."

I repeated Rokura's words. Rin nodded and continued the lesson.

"And finally, we talk about the king of demons himself. There is little we know the demon king but we do know about his possessions. Only two people have ever survived the possessions. My grandfather and your mother, Misaki."

"What?" I asked in shock.

"We don't know how she was able to survive. We also know about his children. Satan has had many children over the course of history but one stands alone. Only one child has ever been born in the middle world." Rin continued.

"Who?" I asked.

"What's the middle world?" Izumi asked.

"Good question, Izumi." Rin said, ignoring me, "The middle world is this one. Many in the past thought the ground under our feet was the barrier. It's not, the barriers are unknown but we do know where they lead. The lower world is the demon world. The upper world however, we don't even know if it exists."

Suddenly the bell rang, making me jump.

"Class dismissed. Misaki, come here." I grabbed my stuff and walked to Rin's desk. "You shouldn't rely on Rokura. Now go, don't be late for class. It will be an interesting one." Rin said, sounding worried.

I nodded and went to catch up with the others.

"Hey, did you get in trouble or something?" Haruki asked as I caught up.

"I bet you got in crazy trouble. What do you think, Kazuma?" Izumi asked.

"I don't care." Kazuma said.

"He never cares. Ever since he decided to become a reaper, he's gotten boring. After screwing up with the cat demon, he vowed to become strong." Reika mocked.

"I think that's a valiant reason. It's kinda like mine. I had a dark past that lead to me wanting to protect people." I said.

I smiled at Kazuma. He looked away, his ears turning red.

"I've been thinking." Reika said.

"Uh oh, everyone run." Haruki joked.

Reika stuck out her tongue at him but continued.

"Teach is acting weird. I blame Misaki. Rin is totally crushing on you. I bet he's one of those guys that really likes a girl but he's afraid to tell her and that's why he acts so cold and distant. He's probably thinks you like someone else and thinks he's not good enough. Which is stupid because he's gorgeous and so powerful."

"You use totally way too much, Reika." Haruki said.

"And you're so wrong. Rin is not 'crushing' on me." I protested.

"Can we just get to class?" Harumi asked, stalking down the hall angrily.

The class room was the same as any other except the desks were pushed against the wall. The teacher was in the middle, drawing something on the floor.

"Aren't you one of the guys from the park?" I asked.

He nodded and said, "I'm Mr.Tanaka. All of you stand around the circle."

We put our stuff down and went to the circle.

"This is a summoning circle. Blood on one of these circles, if you have the capability, will summon demons. Most of you won't be able to summon, sadly the numbers of summoners are decreasing at a high rate. Now for those able to summon, the demon will only be as strong as you but if you show signs of weakness, your demon may turn on you. If you ever feel in danger, just break the circle. Take these and prick your finger." Mr.Tanaka explained.

He past out pieces of paper with a mini summoning circle and needles. Harumi pricked her finger and ran it across the paper.

"Goddess Amaterasu, hear my prayers and leave thy blessed." she chanted.

An arc of white light shot out of the paper and onto the floor. The light expanded into a white fox. Haruki did the same but started with "God Tsukiyomi," to get a white fox.

Everyone else tryed but no one was able to summon. Finally, it was my turn.

"Ms.Tsuri, maybe it's not such a good idea for you to-" Mr.Tanaka started to say.

I had already pricked my finger and I had missed the paper to look up at Mr.Tanaka. A single drop of blood hit the ground and light exploded from the summoning circle. Everyone went skittering backwards. The light died down to reveal what looked like several demons trying to crawl out out the ground. Mr.Tanaka pulled out a gun and started shooting the demons. But more just kept coming up. One smokey black reached out towards me.

"Master...." it said.

It reached out further and grabbed my ankle.

"No! Get away from me!" I screamed.

I kicked it away and moved out of reach. I didn't need to move away because the demons all started to dissolve. I backed up into Haruki, who helped me up.

"What just happened?" Reika asked.

"I-I don't know." I said shaky.

"What matters is that you're ok, right?" Haruki asked.

I nodded and leaned on Haruki, my legs unable to hold me steady. I saw Rin standing next to Mr.Tanaka, talking. Rin looked unhappy and a little bit angry. Rin caught my eye, then disappeared as quickly as he appeared.

"Class dismissed but be careful, the barriers around the school may have been tampered with." Mr.Tanaka said.

I went to grab my bag and Rokura hopped onto my shoulder.

"Misaki." he said with concern.

I scratched under his chin and said, "I'm fine, don't worry about me."
