Another New School

As she stood at the end of the driveway, Courtney heard the honk of the horn and the whurr of the engine, as the UHAUL pulled out the drive and rolled down the street. This was a common sight for 12 year old Courtney, since she had moved 6 times. She went inside for breakfast not feeling well at all. Courtney was about to start 7th grade. Now, for any normal rising 7th grader, this was no problemo, but of course Courtney was not normal. The fact that she moved 6 times in her 12 years of life tells you all you need to know. Poor Courtney went to 5 different schools in different states across the country. She never liked a single one of them. Her favorite year had to be kindergarten because no one judged her. All of the kids in her class were all a bit weird, so she sort of fit in. Except just like every school, no one shared her love of books. As Courtney approached the table, her dog, Sadie, came up, paws on her shoulders and started giving her a number of slobbery kisses before Courtney had to get her off. She stared down at her breakfast. Oatmeal with raisins and brown sugar. She sighed. She reluctantly ate her oatmeal, although it was like chewing wet cement. With her backpack slung over her shoulder, she gave her mom a quick peck on the cheek, and headed to her bus stop. Courtney didn't know anyone, so she sat down on a bench away from everyone and began to read. This earned some strange looks from the other kids, because it just so happens that they often could be caught complaining about their reading assignments. "Well that's just great", thought Courtney. "It will be just like all of the other schools I've ever been too." The bright yellow bus squealed to a stop in front of the bus stop and she joined the line of students boarding the bus. Many kids passed by in the aisle, but none sat with her. Until one did.
