As Courtney and her mother arrived at the school, Court felt her stomach drop at the sight of Steven's car. It was officially happening then. Her mom got out of the car with such grace and walked toward the building with such purpose that it was hard not to follow her example. But she just couldn't do it. She just wanted to collapse on the ground and not do anything. Instead, Courtney tried her best to mimic her mom, but it just didn't have the same effect. As the mother-daughter duo walked through the doors of the principal's office, they found Steven's family already there and seated. "Hi there, Courtney," Steven's mom simpered. "Hi there, Ms. Conoza," Courtney replied, hoping her tone didn't sound too harsh. The last thing she wanted was to make a bad first impression. Even though she probably already had. As Courtney politely sat down for the conversation, Mr. Heptman, their principal, walked into the room. An average man, with defined laugh lines, and a small build, he was kind and understanding. Of course, she had only met him very briefly during the meet and greet with her teachers. "Mr. and Mrs. Conoza, Mrs. Enamos. Steven and Courtney. Welcome in. Now, I understand we have a serious misunderstanding regarding Steven and Courtney," he said. " I would like to hear Courtney's point of view first." " Well, you see sir, I didn't know anyone at my bus stop so I sat down to read. When I got on the bus, Steven pushed through the aisle to get to me, seeming like he wanted to be my friend. Only he didn't. He made rude comments about me reading and the whole bus laughed along with him. That's not all though. When we were at PE, Coach put us next to each other and when I said I didn't feel right, Coach told Steven to walk me to the office. While we walked, he made smart remarks and unkind comments. When we got to the office, he acted nice in front of my mom, fooling her, but only I knew the true story," Courtney finished. " I see, well Steven, what's your side of the story?" "Sir, I knew Courtney is a new student and wanted her to feel welcome, so I started talking to her. She took offense to what I said, and here we are, her talking like I am an Eddie Hascal," Steven finished. " I am terribly sorry Steven, but given your past, you will receive detention."
