Ever wonder why Lord Denethor, Steward of Gondor, loved one son but hated the other? It was because of the one who stood between the two brothers, their sister Taranor. The trio could never be separated even though two were to learn war and such things that a Steward should know and the other was to learn to be a Lady and marry some Lord. However Taranor refused to learn such things, she didn't want to be treated differently from her brothers so she forced them to teach her everything they had learned. They would stay up late into the night teaching their sister and in return, she would teach them whatever they wanted to learn. Faramir showed interest in the language of the Elves and their traditions meanwhile Boromir never seemed interested in any of it. He just enjoyed laughing at his younger siblings and mocking them which would result in the two attacking him.
The trio fit perfectly together as Boromir was the strength, Taranor was the mind that held the strength at bay and Faramir was the heart that reminded the two older siblings what was right and wrong. Strength and wisdom could not thrive without compassion and that was why when their father found out that Faramir had been disregarding his training for scrolls and history and he became angry, Taranor forgot logic and struck her father with a book before his hand could touch Faramir. The fear of her father destroying the good in her little brother was too much to bare and she forgot her own self until her father struck her to the ground with his cane, causing her skin to split above her eye.
Taranor was 11 at the time. Faramir was 10.
From that day forward their father turned all of his attention to Boromir, showering him with gifts and glory, only paying his other children any attention when he rebuked them, of course, this had been happening since their mother died but it only got worse as the years wore on. But the two youngest never blamed their older brother, they loved him dearly as did he. Whenever he could Boromir would attempt to deflect the praise onto his siblings but their father would always look at them with disgust.
As the years moved on the attacks from Mordor worsened, more and more soldiers died at the hands of orcs, Taranor would wait in fear every time her brothers would leave. She would barely eat or sleep and would rarely leave the balcony of her room until she saw the soldiers returning, then she would run as fast as she could to the citadel to greet her brothers.
It wasn't until after the battle at Osgiliath that Lord Denethor, for the first time in many years, acknowledged his daughter. He was seated below the throne of Gondor with his three children standing before him. They were all similarly dressed, Taranor refused to wear a dress most days unless it was required so she stood between her brothers wearing trousers and a leather vest over a green tunic that went down to her knees, the white tree of Gondor stitched into the vest. The only difference between her and her brothers was that they were wearing black velvet tunics and swords.
"Ah, my children." Lord Denethor said as he stood and gave Boromir a hug before sending a disgusted look to his two youngest. Taranor looked nothing like either of her parents with wild blonde curls and bright blue eyes, and Faramir who was a perfect mix between the parents, as was Boromir.
"You sent for us father." Boromir said, their father nodded and said,"remember what I told you of Lord Elrond's request?" Boromir and Faramir nodded as Taranor looked between what was left of her family.
"What request?" She asked. Lord Denethor frowned but ignored his daughter as he said, looking only at Boromir, "I have decided that your sister shall go with you. Those two need to be separated."
Taranor felt her fists clench as she nearly took a step forward, but she was stopped by a large hand that enclosed around her fist. Faramir gently squeezed his sister's hand, silently advising her not to make a move at their father, as much as the idea of being parted from his siblings hurt him he was glad that Taranor would finally have a chance to get away from Denethor. Faramir himself had many occasions to avoid his father as a Captain of Gondor, but as the Steward's ward, his sister had no such occasion.
After the plans had been made for the journey Taranor and Boromir prepared to leave, Taranor still having no idea what the meeting in Rivendell was about. She had even asked her brothers multiple times but got no answer, she didn't dare to ask her father for he would surely strike her again as he often would if she asked the wrong question, or too many.
