A New Neighbourhood

The creepy cat lady who resided across the road stared intensely at me as I opened the front door of my house. That, I wasn't going to miss.

Her beady grey eyes seemed to penetrate my soul as she stroked her favourite cat (out of 38 and counting) which was a Canadian hairless cat called Fluffball.

Avoiding eye contact with her, I placed (dropped with a huge thud would be more accurate) the last of the moving boxes, a box of toiletries. With all the moving boxes snuggled tightly in the van, I hopped into the backseat of my dads car.

"Sharna, did you pack my toiletries? I was busy wrapping our couch in bubble wrap," Said my dad, twisting his body to face me from the drivers seat. I rolled my eyes.

"Yes, dad, and thank you for scarring me for the next few years," I said sarcastically giving a dramatic shudder. Some toiletries I had to pack were too PG for this story.

Looking out the dusty window, I gave a silent good bye, and a loud sneeze.

All the houses were identically small and identically messy. Most were rented houses, with clutter chilling out on the front balcony. Rusty bed frames; ancient sinks; type writers - yes, those old things; musty old dog houses. You name it, it's on someone's veranda.

This street contained both good and bad (mostly bad) memories that would never be forgotten.

The most latest edition to my 'box of embarrassing memories' was when I had a major crush on this bloke called Samson. His beautifully brushed blonde hair swept over his daring blue eyes hypnotised every female in his path. He lived five doors down from where I lived.

Every girl in the neighbourhood had a crush on him at some point. I swear even that creepy cat lady (who is a widow by the way) had a crush on him.

His looks were to die for. That was what stole the girls' hearts. His charming appearance covered his real personality, I found that out the hard way.

At some point last year I had the bravery to go up to him and talk to him. When I said walked, I really meant stumbled awkwardly - like a penguin with dog faeces on its foot.

When I eventually was two metres away from him, I gathered my courage and said 'hey, I live just around the block, I've seen you before, what's your name?'

After watching Mean Girls, I came to a conclusion that acting dumb was a good conversation starter.

Samson then replied with 'oh, I thought you knew me, I'm Samson, I'm very popular around here, everyone knows me, aren't you friends with Ariana? She's my girlfriend,"

plot twist much?

How big can someone's ego get?

Ariana knew that I had a huge crush on him! How could she do this to me? Stammering, I said 'oh, that's nice,' and walked (stumbled) away back home to shovel two litres of double chocolate ice cream down my throat.

Lesson learned: be careful who you make friends with. Or, LOVE IS OVERRATED.

I have learned a couple of times that love just resulted with heart break. Some other memories may be brought up later in the story but I am not here to tell you childhood stories, go to your grandmother for that.

Anyway, I laid my head against the window. A lot was going to change. A new school, a new neighbourhood, no friends, it was as if my life was starting afresh, which was probably a good thing.

Suddenly snapping out of my thoughts, I stared out the window and watched cars and buildings fly by. Letting boredom wash over me, I closed my eyes.

This new house was a five hour drive away. I wouldn't be surprised if I began to fall aslee...

From the Author: What's up, wattpad fam? Welcome to the world of Sharna! This is will be the realest love story you have ever heard, so brace yourselves for an awkward, cute, funny adventure that will tug your heart strings! What's your opinion on the creepy cat lady, though? Inventing her character was quite a challenge as I didn't want to present a stereotypical woman who obsesses over cats. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this book, I will hopefully be updating every Monday, Thursday & Saturday. Love you guys❤️
