"Sooooo...what's your name?" Asked the girl.

"Sharna Cameron, what's your name?" I said, being as polite as possible. This person was the first nice human at this school so far.

"Harriet O'Hare. I am the environmental club president, the sock puppets chair person and the musical theatre representative. In fact, by looking at your timetable, I see that you are in the same roll class as me," Said Harriet in her really fast and bubbly voice.

Her positive, happy and energetic mood was contagious. I couldn't help but break out a smile.

"RIIIIINNNGGGGGGG" the bell echoed through the halls. This was it, my first day at Carter Park High was starting. Harriet grabbed my arm and dragged me to Q 14.

Students, left and right took their time entering the classroom. Harriet lightly shoved me in the room. Everyone was already claiming and 'saving' desks.

My face heated bright red, like a beetroot, as I walked down the aisles of desks to a lonesome spot at the back. Sitting down, I sighed with relief as Harriet somehow got the seat beside me.

People started whispering to each other and pointing at Harriet. Well, she was quite unique.

Her red, frizzy curls held in place by a glitzy head band; bright, pink sequinned shoes and chunky jewellery on her ears, wrists and around her neck. She was quite an interesting site.

I noticed that she had an obsession over sparkly things. Surprisingly though, she didn't have a care in the world that people were looking at her weirdly.

"Hey Harriet, I like your shoes, did you borrow them off your five year old sister?" Said a boy two seats in front of me. He wore red and black yeezys and had his hair heavily gelled to one side. He also had on sunglasses for some reason.

Harriet smiled at the boy and twirled her hair.

"Oh, hi there, Luther, no, actually, I got them from the Salvation Army. They're pretty cool, right?" She looked down at her shoes with pride. I also noticed that she was blushing.

"Stop chit chatting, class, I'm going to mark the roll now. Zoe, stop flirting with Levi over there and Mark, spit that gum out immediately," the teacher, who I later found out was Ms. Jones, had a grey, strict bun at the top of her head.

She wore stockings under an old fashioned - looking dress. She wore polished boots that had a large brass buckle on each shoe.

I imagined her being half witch, half elf. Yes, I know, I have the weirdest imagination.

Anyway, let's get back to the story...

"Oh, before I forget, we have a new student at this school, her name is Sharna Cameron. Stand up, dear,"

Crap.

My face felt hot. My shaking legs lifted me up as the whole class turned to look my way. I tucked a strand of long brown hair behind my ear.

"What school did you go to before you came here?"

"Are you poor? Your uniform looks old,"

"Wait, were you home schooled?"

Questions were shouted around the classroom. Embarrassed, I said,

"Oh, um, yeah, I've been homeschooled for five years, I went to Brumpton Primary from grade one to grade five," I said, quickly. I sat down and looked at the floor to avoid conversation.

After Ms. Jones took the roll, all the students stood up and scattered off to their first class. I had Mathematics.

My lessons whizzed by. Now I had to face lunch break. Entering the cafeteria, I grabbed some slop from the 'help yourself' area. I had forgotten what school food was like.

Note to self: pack your own lunch.

Scanning the zone, I found Harriet sitting alone on the floor, leaning against a wall. Smiling, I walk over to her and sat beside her.

She seemed to enjoy my company. It didn't look like she had many friends.

"What's it like being home schooled?" She said suddenly.

"Well, it's ok, you get to do work in pyjamas and that, but I never got the chance to socialise with other kids,"

She nodded and eagerly ate the slop that sat on her tray. As I picked at my food (if you can even call it that), I looked up to see...

From the Author: Harriet O'Hare is such an interesting character! She is my personal favourite character in the book, not gonna lie. What do you think Sharna sees at the end of this chapter? Hmmmmm...
I hope you keep reading. Love you guys❤️
