"Eve, I can't concentrate with this music so loud." My mother gripes as we drive down the highway.
We are on our way back from the mall—she begged me to come. I accepted to get her off my case because I know when Evan comes over she is going to say that I spend all my time with him like she always does.
I turn down the music, resting my head against the window. She insisted I buy myself new clothes. She bought herself some new high heels that she said were made for her feet. Anything with an expensive price tag is made for her.
"Is Ace coming over before dinner?"
"Evan."
"Honey, I don't understand how we met him as Ace and now I am supposed to be okay with calling him Evan."
I give my mother a dirty look. She never understands anything out of the norm.
"It's Evan," I say again.
Gray and Dad are working on the old mustang my dad bought a few years ago. It's something they like to do together. They remodel the car, take it to a few shows and then sell it.
"I'm going to start dinner," Mom announces. "I think Evan is joining us tonight." She kisses my dad.
My dad slides back underneath the old mustang.
Gray hands over a wrench looking at me. "Sounds like a great dinner."
"What's that mean, Gray?" My dad asks from below.
"Oh, nothing. I'm kidding." He leans against the car, avoiding my death stare.
Ever since the fight, he doesn't have a lot to say. And when my parents asked him why his face was bruised he told them he tripped and hit a door handle. Of course they bought it, it was coming from Gray.
I doubt he will mess with Evan anymore.
As if out of thin air Evan tugs on the sleeve of my shirt. "Hey, what's going on?"
"Just got back from the mall, what about you?"
"Work. How are you, Mr. Cardwell?" he asks my dad.
"I'm great Evan, thanks for asking. Are you staying for supper?"
Evan looks at me. I roll my eyes; I don't want to stick around any longer than we have to.
"Actually, I was thinking about taking Eve to dinner," he says.
"Too bad," Gray says dryly, rounding the car.
I tug at his back pocket, taking off for my house, Evan follows behind me.
"Hello Kay," Evan says, giving my mom a hug. My mother's disappears beneath his biceps. She pats him on the back, and goes back to chopping.
I admire his messy hair and his faded blue jeans. He doesn't have to try hard to look good. He is simply gorgeous. And every time we hang out the more I am attracted to him.
"It's always nice to see you, Evan." She shoots me a look letting me know she used his proper name.
"I'm making salad with dinner. Is there anything that you don't like in yours?"
"I wanted to take Eve out tonight. I hope you don't mind." He gives her his most sincere smile.
I blow him a kiss from behind my mother, grateful he knows how to work the charm to get me out of family obligations.
"Oh, anything special?" My mother asks.
"Promotion at work."
She nods, smiling at the both of us. "Alright, you have fun, and congratulations."
