I welcome the water in the shower that morning. I'm not at home and I am in a great mood.
"What's that smell, Evan?" I tease, coming into the kitchen.
He is standing over the stove. His brother, the guy that I saw last night stands next to him scrambling eggs. He raises an eyebrow and goes right on whisking the eggs.
"I'm making breakfast and then we're going somewhere," he tells me.
Kenny clutches the bowl, giving another unreadable expression. I touch the towel on my head. He smirks.
"I'm sorry my brother is such an asshole that he can't introduce us. I'm Kenny." He extends his hand. I accept and take a seat at the counter.
"It's nice to meet you." I look at Evan. "I didn't know you cooked, Evan."
"I think Evan is trying to impress you," Kenny says. He punches Evan in his arm. Evan takes plates from the cabinet. He leans across the counter and kisses me, like I am the only one in the room. He doesn't care his brother is right there witnessing the whole thing.
He turns the burner off, and starts transferring the food into serving dishes.
Kenny grabs a plate.
Evan slaps his hand. "Dude, be a gentleman for once and let her get her food first."
Kenny hands me a plate.
"So how did you end up hanging out with this guy?" Kenny sits his fork down.
He's a cocky guy, and from the looks of him he thinks highly of himself. The kind of guy that knows he is god's gift to woman. With a joker smile and eyes of blue draped with dark lashes that show how wild he can be. A golden tan and dark hair perfectly styled.
"It was all by accident. I think it was his charm that kept me around." I smile at Evan.
Kenny raises an eyebrow. "You think he's charming?"
"Yes, I do."
"Well, you must be into boring." He smirks and the two of them shoot each other knowing glances.
I am not amused. "Not in the least." I push my food across my plate. "I don't think anything about him is boring."
"That's awesome. It warms my heart to see Evan found someone who likes all his boring qualities." He lifts his chin. "I'll see you next week."
The sound of squealing tires proves he's long gone. And a small part of me is glad. The guy is a bit abrasive.
Evan cleans up the dishes.
"Is the food okay?" he asks.
I stand up, helping him with cleanup. "It was actually really good. You're a good cook."
"Carlo was always cooking when we were young. It's an important part of our family."
"Cooking in my house is just a chore," I say.
"I wanted to take you to meet Carlo. He lives in Erie Ridge, it's not that far from here." He finally lets me in on his secret.
Erie Ridge is a gated community in the high class part of the city—you only live there if you can afford it.
"Are you sure you want me to meet him?" The thought of meeting his family makes me nervous. I'm not the best at first impressions. I worry they won't like me.
"I want you to meet my father. I want you to know where I come from." He walks down the hall to his room.
"I don't have anything to wear. Is now really the right time?" I ask, running a hand through my hair.
