The ride back is not fun. I ditch the idea of the cab ride home, neither of them is in the mood for my antics. Evan lost his good mood hours ago and he isn't saying much. He's just staring out the window.
At least his arm is around me. And I feel better, no matter what happens I know he will always be there.
Kenny isn't saying anything, and the radio isn't blaring obnoxious music. And Ari is fast asleep.
I wonder what this means. Carlo is pissed enough as it is with Kenny's latest clowning.
Kenny's phone rings and he tosses it over his shoulder, it hits Evan in the knee.
Evan sighs picking it up. "Why am I the one answering it?"
Kenny shrugs. "I'm driving, and you're better at smoothing things over with Carlo." He crosses two lanes, giving me a heart attack.
Everything about Kenny is pissing me off. He thinks he can push all his mess onto Evan and I don't like it.
Evan answers the phone, and I don't need to know about the conversation to know how pissed he is. He whips the cell phone at the back of Kenny's head.
I flinch, Kenny swerves and pulls the car over. His tires screech, Evan throws his arm in front of me before I hit the seats.
Ari wakes up confused, but one look at Evan and Kenny on the side of the road she understands everything and is yelling at me. "Do something!"
I'm hesitant to get out of the car. I don't mind him beating Kenny's face in. He deserves anything he gets.
"Evan, let's just get home. You can deal with your brother later when you're calmer," Ari suggest.
"I'm going to deal with him right now."
I'm not sure what to do.
Ari leans in. "You need to stop him, he's going to kill him."
"What can I do?" I ask.
"Calm him down. He'll listen to you," she coaxes me.
I step in between Evan and Kenny. And I take Evan's hand in mine. "Can we go home?"
He relaxes. "Carlo wants to see us as soon as we're back because of this screw-up."
Kenny leans against the Camaro, arms crossed that smug look on his face.
"So thank you, brother. For putting me into yet another fucked up situation." Evan goes around the car to the driver side and climbs in the back.
Ari sighs, getting back in the car herself.
She smiles at me. "You really have a way with him."
I nod, stroking Evan's hand, he closes his eyes and blocks out the world.
"Yeah, you do." Kenny seconds her statement. And coming from him it makes me feel good.
"You calmed him down. That's amazing." She kisses the side of Kenny's face, thankful that someone saved his ass. "Kenny messed up, he knows he did. He isn't going to let Evan take the blame. Evan should know that," Ari says more to Kenny than to me. She waits for Kenny to say something.
"You know how he is, Ari. He'll get over it one way or another," Kenny tells her.
"Because of Carlo." Ari reminds him. Kenny shakes his head in agreement, but he doesn't say anything further.
