Chapter 5: To Infinity and Beyond

I can't believe this is actually happening.

"This is so exciting!" Annie smiled, resting her head in her hands as she scanned the crowd of students with dreamy eyes.

"I'm going to pass out," Katherine whispered.

"What was that, Bright?" Tony turned to her with a playful smile on his lips.

"You heard me, Adams. I'm serious."

"It will be fine," Mary looked at her with a smile that made her feel better instantly.

After every 7th year arrived at the Great Hall, the Headmistress stood up to talk.

She apologized about the situation again, then she repeated what she said the day before.

"Now, on this list," she said, holding up a paper, "I have all the pairs. Please, after you hear your and your partner's name, remain seated where you are now, you don't have to come up here. After I announced every pair, you will be escorted to your new living spaces."

"What?" Mary whisper-shouted, looking at the others.

Annie gave her a look that said 'pay attention', so she turned back towards McGonagall with a frown on her face.

"The pairs will share a bedroom together, and three couples are going to share a Common Room. More information about this will be given to you after the pairing."

The Headmistress took a look at the crowd, then she sighed.

"I believe it's time to start... Miss Liza Turner with..."

She started announcing the pairs, and Kat became more and more anxious as the time passed.

"Miss Annie Blank with Mr Chase Bennett."

Annie's face dropped. She became so pale, Katherine almost stood up to take her to the Hospital Wing.

"Oh, my..."

She grinned at her, hoping that she would be happy with Chase.

"Miss Pansy Parkinson with Mr Tony Adams."

Mary couldn't contain herself and she let out a light chuckle.

"You should see your face, dude."

Kat slapped Mary's arm on the table, shaking her head.

"Pansy's a good match. She's a great girl," she smiled at Tony.

He just nodded nervously.

Mary got paired with a boy from Ravenclaw, which she was happy for, saying that she already kind of knew him because he was on their Quidditch team.

"Miss Katherine Bright with..."

Hearing that name, Blaise shot his head up, looking at Draco with desperate eyes.

"Man, this is my last chance..."

"...Mr Draco Malfoy."

Draco was a bit surprised, not believing his ears.

"Sorry, man," he looked over at Blaise.

He narrowed his eyes, staring at him for a couple of seconds, then he shook his head.

"No, you need her more than I do."

Draco furrowed his eyebrows, then he decided to look for the Hufflepuff with his eyes. He was hoping he could catch her attention, but she was staring at her hands in her lap, her hair falling over her face.

He sighed, turning his attention back to McGonagall as she continued announcing the couples.

After a while, he scoffed.
