So we got a message from Earth today. Well, we get them all the time and they're usually just to check up on us or to reassure us that they haven't forgotten about us and tell us that there are still humans on Earth. It's comforting to be reminded that we aren't the only humans alive because it's so easy to forget sometimes.
But today, we received a short, sharp message that has me annoyed. It went like this:
Crew of ONE, we are ceasing regular communications effective immediately.
I don't know what this means, but something must be happening back on Earth. Or maybe they don't think we're worth it anymore. To us, we've only been gone a year. I haven't done the math, but I know it's so much longer than that for those on Earth. For them, generations have passed and everyone we used to know is dead. If we had never left, we would be dead too. It's sad, but it's true. I knew this when I signed up, I've moved past my homesickness for a planet that never loved me and now I've just got to keep going.
Anyway, most of the others are in a panic about what the message means but Skyler is strangely calm about it. Well, Katri is pretty calm too, but that's just who she is and who she's had to be when she flew military jets but with Skyler, it's like she knew it was going to happen. I mean, I suppose we all knew it would happen eventually, we won't be remembered forever. One day, communications will cease permanently. One day, we will be forgotten. After all, we are in space and people can't spend forever looking up at the stars.
Except for us, I suppose. We can always see the stars, no matter where we go. We're in goddamned space.

P.S. I think I've given up with the smiley faces on my sign-off.
