This is part 2 of an update. Please make sure you've read the previous part first :)
----
He was alone, the last person left on a spaceship which had once contained seven others.
They had left Earth behind and travelled through the stars for five years. They had abandoned the people they loved and the people who loved them. They had given up everything they had ever known.
'They're gone! They're all gone!'
Only months ago, they had realised that Earth had completely ceased contact with the eight of them. Each of them had feared the worst. Earth had gone.
'We can't be saved! We can't be saved!'
One by one, the crew had gone insane.
He remembered when the first one had begun to run around, grabbing the others by their shoulders and shaking them. She had screamed in their ears, eyes wild and seemed so desperate to make them understand, to make them see what she saw.
'We have to save ourselves!'
They had shrieked and sobbed, cackled and grinned. The whites of their eyes turned red, their skin paled and was covered in a thin, glistening layer of sweat. The most intelligent people he had ever known dwindled away until only madmen were left.
'We're the last ones left!'
It had taken each one of them an hour of raving before they sealed themselves into the airlock. Once they were in the airlock, they had wasted no time in pressing the button for the doors. In seconds, they were sucked out into space, leaving the survivors behind. Within a few days, the next one would go mad.
'One day you'll see. One day you'll understand.'
And now he was the last one left.
In the mirror, Conner Velour met his own eyes. Ocean blue stared back at him, as calm and peaceful as the waves on a lazy summer's day. He smiled and turned away.
The screams in his head were quiet now as he walked through the halls of the spaceship. His footsteps echoed off the metal floors.
Stepping into the small, white room, he understood what they meant. The eight of them had been doomed from the start. This "mission" had always been suicide. They had left everyone and everything behind for what? To find a new home for the human race?
But they had been too late.
His fingers reached out to the left and hit the button on the wall.
A/N: So that's it. One is officially complete! What did you think of it? Did you like it? Is there any part of it you think I could have done differently/better? Please hit the star button to vote if you enjoyed :)
Feel free to check out any of my other works, I have two short story collections and two fantasy novels (one of them is a retelling of The Little Mermaid).
But as you read this book, you might want to read another sci-fi book. If you are, my friend and I have a shared account where we're currently working on a sci-fi/dystopian novel called Starbound. Our account's called TheBookWizzes.
Thanks for reading this and I'm glad you stuck with this story all the way up until the end.
Bye :)
