Chapter Fourteen

I slept sundy away and woke up to my alarm on Monday morning. I couldn't bring myself to get out of bed.

"Tiffany! Time to go!" Lindy came in. "Dude, get outa bed!"

"Im not going to school." I said.

"Tiffany, I know what's ping on with Lucas but you can't skip school." she was wrong. She had NO idea.

"Watch me." I said. Lindy flopped down on the bed next to me. "Go away." I said, feeling another tear leave. I thought my eyes would become deserts soon, running out of water.

"You can't stay like this." she said.

"I don't feel good." I said.

"You look fine."

"my head hurts."

"That dosent count."

"My heart isn't beating anymore."

"Youre breathing just fine."

"My stomach hurts!"

"TIFFANY!" she shoved me in the shoulder.

"Leave. You'll make me puke." I said.

"Do you even know what today is?!" she exploded.

"I've been lying in bed depressed for three days. Of course I don't!" I retorted.

"OH MY GOD! IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY!" she said. That made me start bawling. I turned onto my stomach and buried my face in my pillow. This is officially the worst birthday of my life. Eighteen now, and the man I love is in some other state far away. Lucas, GOD I miss you SO much!

"Come on, sis. Eat something, at least!" she probed. She sighed when I didn't answer and left the room, returning a second later with John and Simon.

"Sis, you really gotta get up. Happy eighteenth birthday, by the way." John said.

"And adult already." Simon sighed. "Eighteen..." it seemed as though they were trying to tell me something. What?

"Lucas is one lucky-"

"Shut up!" I sat up. "I tried to call Lucas and his number is disconnected.

"Email?" Simon suggested. I got up and typed as fast as I could

Lucas, your cell number is disconnected! How the hell am I supossed to talk to you now?! Anyway, please please cgeck your email and massage me back.

Much much much much love,

<3Tiffany Thomas<3

I hit send and waited. I didn't realize I was holding my breath until John said something.

"Breathe, tiff! In out, in out. It's not that hard!"

The computer beeped. One new email.

'Your message has failed to be delivered. Please check your adress and try again.' I started crying. No email. No cell phone. This would mean the end. It seemed as though my life has come to a sudden halt.

"What?" Lindy came over, peering over my shaking shoulders at the screne.

"Uh oh." Simon said.

"Damn it." John said under his breath. The door bell rang and Lindy left with the others. I stared unbelievingly at the computer monitor. It was my birthday. The date in the upper bar said so. Lucas, where are you?

~*~Lucas POV~*~

I threw my phone across the room. The numbers wouldn't connect, I couldn't send a text, or anything! I wouldn't even be able to tell he happy birthday! Aparently my contract or service was dead. I got onto the laptop and tried emailing Tiffany. I couldn't log on.

"Mom?" I asked angrily. "Why won't anything work?"

"Well what are you trying to do, sweetie?" mom came in holding a coffee cup in her hands, wrapped in a blue bathrobe.

"I can't call, text, or email!" I hit the bed hard as I could.

"Honey, you know the drill. Cell is dead. Then after a month we get new accounts." I grabbed my wallet and pulled on a tshirt. I slid my feet into my old tennishoes and opened the front door.

"Lucas, where are you going?"

"To a pay phone to call her." I slammed the door.

"My son is in way over his head with this girl." I heard mom sigh. I caught the bus and took it into the city. I found a pay phone, sliding coins in.

"Hello?" there was a sniff, but some hope in the familliar voice.

"Tiffany! It's Lucas!" I held on tight to the phone.

"OH MY GOD!" she squeeled. "I couldn't call you - it was disconnected! Then the email was down, saying address didn't exits and other things! Oh my gosh, I miss you so much!"

"Happy eighteenth." I smiled into the phone. She laughed saddly into the speaker.

"I can't believe your not here to celebrate." she said. "it's not really a good day without you."

"Tiffany," we talked for as long as my quarters lasted. Eventually we hung up with an I love you. The fifteen dollars was worth it.

~*~Tiffany POV~*~

I stared down at the phone, wishing it was already to orris so he and I could talk again. My heart was throbbing almost painfully in my chest, threatening to break my ribs. I fell back into my feather pillows and imagined that the one I held tigh was Lucas. I drifted off thinking I was holding onto him.
