(Virgil's POV)

Virgil could tell Emma was nervous.

It wasn't uncommon for people to be scared of needles and such, but he had never seen anyone quiet this bad before.

"Its all right. It will only hurt for a second," Virgil said as he tried to find Emma's vein.

"You won't find one," Emma said softly.

Sure enough, Virgil couldn't find a vein big enough to take blood from. He flipped her hand over and concealed his surprise at the amount of scars on the back of her hand.

"Just ask," she said, letting a sigh.

Virgil cleared his throat. He was a little shocked that Emma had guessed what he was thinking so easily.

"What happened?"

"I taught myself how to fight with knives. I ended up cutting my hands quiet a few times."

"Why?"

(Emma's POV)

The simple question caught Emma off guard. Most of the time, doctors and medics all said that she was an idiot for teaching herself.

"Its a long story," she said glancing up as Virgil stuck the needle in her hand.

"We have time. It will be a bit before your done here," he said looking at the small amount of blood in the tube.

"You wouldn't understand."

"Try me."

"Let's just say that there is something in my DNA that makes it so things will attack me. I had to learn to defend myself." There was something about Virgil that Emma could help but trust.

"So you taught yourself?" Virgil asked pulling then tube and the needle out of Emma's hand.

"Yeah, it wasn't the easiest thing to do," she sighed, rubbing the bandage the Virgil had put on.

"I can tell," he said with a soft chuckle.

"You should see my brother. He has more scars the I do."

"I take it you train together?"

"Yep. Sometimes me and him could go on for hours. He uses a sword while I use my knives. His wife said it almost looks like we're dancing when we spar," Emma said hopping down from the table.

"Take it easy. I just took blood," Virgil said putting his arms out to steady her.

"I'm fine," Emma said, not even dizzy.

As Emma went up stairs, Virgil looked at the vial of her blood.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw it shimmer gold.

There was something odd about Emma, and Virgil wanted to find out what it was.
