A/N: So this little one was written by SashaL that we ended up deciding wouldn't fit, but we still liked it, so we decided to post it here. This was from way back, and I forgot about it, so it's only getting posted now xD Check out the main story over on SashaL's page!
I can't believe I did that... The others couldn't believe I had done it either... Here we are, sitting in the city center, minding our own business when this girl just rocks up... Now, I think nothing of her at first but she seems to be taking an intense interest in flirting with all us boys of the group... I mean, it's not every day you get the Avatar and his companions strolling through your village to buy supplies. Then her attention turned to me.
"So, Sokka says you're something really special," she stated as if saying the sky was blue.
I nearly choked on my cup of water.
"He did?" I asked. "I don't think I'm all that special."
"Well, how many boys around here have such fabulous hair?"
"None that I can see," I said. "Your hair is pretty fabulous yourself."
It really was. Long, chocolate brown and pulled up into a lovely ponytail that came down over her shoulder. Too bad her fringe hid half her face...
I reached out to brush it aside, but she stopped me. I don't know why... the part of her face that wasn't hidden was very beautiful...
"I'd rather you didn't..." I could see the pain in her eyes.
Something had happened to her. She was no longer the confident girl I was flirting with earlier. Then I noticed the bandage.
"What happened?" I asked.
She looked away.
"Fire Nation?"
She nodded.
"I'm sorry."
She looked straight at me. There was a fury in her eye that wasn't there before.
"'I'm Sorry'," she mocked. "Is that all people say when they find out you've lost your home, your family and your face to the Fire Nation?!"
"I didn't..."
"Save it!" She cut me off. "I am sick and tired of everyone's mock pity. You're not sorry for what happened to me. You're sorry I'm not beautiful."
"I know better than most what it's like to lose everything."
"You know nothing!" she hissed at me.
"You're right," I whispered. "I know nothing of my family, or where I'm from, or why I'm here... I can't even remember my name."
She was silenced.
"I woke up one morning, and I couldn't remember anything. I have tried to make the most of my second chance. Whether it was because of the Fire Nation, or something else... I've lost everything that makes me... well.. Me..."
"I'm sorry..." she whispered.
"I know how you feel..."
"I didn't know..."
"I didn't expect you to."
"It's just..." She reached back and undid the bandage. "I'm sick of the meaningless apologies."
She was still beautiful. Even with the scar on her face. It looked like a blooming flower around her eye.
"You look beautiful," I said, taking her hand. "And I truly am sorry for everything."
"Thank you," she whispered, a tear sliding down her face. "You don't have to apologize."
"I do though," I looked at my hands. "I don't remember anything, and so I don't know if I hurt you, but my people did and I need to make that right."
"What are you talking about?" she asked. "I never saw you or your companions before today."
"I am not talking about these guys," I sighed. "I'm from the Fire Nation and to make it worse, I'm a firebender."
She backed away. I could see the fear written all over her face. Would I hurt her? Would I start shooting off fireballs at her? She hates me. I know it... Sharing my secret would only bring trouble... Now she is gonna scream and I'm gonna be attacked and kicked out and never allowed in this village again. Then she kissed me...
Not a full on kiss... Just a little peck on the cheek.
"You can't be blamed for what you don't know," she said.
"Thank you," I whispered before kissing her back.
"Guys!" Aang yelled. "Let's go!"
I sighed before giving her a hug and leaving.
"Who was that?" Katara asked.
"I have no idea," I replied flatly.
"So you just go around kissing random girls?"
"No... well... yeah..."
"So how come I haven't gotten one yet?" she blushed a little.
"Well, I've wanted to... but... wouldn't that be a bit weird?"
"Why?"
"Most men want to kiss pretty girls that they...like, and, um, care about," I tried to explain. "Especially if the pretty girl gets within kissing range. We don't always do it, obviously, but the impulse is there."
"So why haven't you?" she asked, scooting closer to me.
"Because..." I couldn't quite find the right words. "You are... Too young... too... Too far out of my league."
"What does that mean?"
"I don't know my past," I said. "So I don't want to do anything about relationships until I know who I am."
"Oh..."
"I mean," I tried to explain, "For all I know, Amaya and I coulda had a thing before we got separated..."
"Okay," she sounded a little dejected.
"I hope this doesn't change anything," I said softly, wrapping an arm over her shoulders.
"No," she whispered as she snuggled in and laid her head on my chest.
