Chapter 8:
Derek typed another text. 'Nori! What's going on? Are you okay?' Send. Nothing. Nothing for four days. Last time he spoke to her was five days ago when they were looking at the photos of Theo with Aurora.
All the worst thoughts went through his head. Two days earlier, when he called the LAPD they wouldn't do a wellness check, even when he told them she had hypoglycemia and that she could have been passed out.
He opened Facebook. Nori was obsessed with social media. He'd never seen her go an entire day without posting a status or at least sharing an article, let alone four days. He was seriously worried. He opened the messenger and typed, 'Andrea. It's been four days since I heard from her. You have to go check on her. I'm really worried. The LAPD wouldn't do a wellness check two days ago when I called them. Please I need your help!'
Three little dots told him Andrea was typing. His phone made a soft ping. 'I'll head over in a few. I just got back from Arizona last night. I'm sure she's fine. Probably just a depression spike after filming ended. But I'll call you when I get there.'
Andrea was the one who set him up with Nori. She was Nori's best friend and a close friend of his from high school.
Derek waited impatiently. He'd been so distracted in classes. He paced around his room before staring at the same spot he'd been looking for the last four days. He opened his dresser and pulled out the blue ring box, the emerald and opal ring looked exactly like he expected. He had been planning on asking her to marry him when he went to see her at Thanksgiving.
What if this was her way of breaking up with him? What if she died? Nothing but the worst could come to mind.
His phone finally buzzed. He answered. "Andrea? How is she?"
"Dude, she's not here."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean she's not here. And her apartment is a mess. I lived with that girl the entirety of college and she would never keep her place looking like this."
"Without touching anything I need you to see if her laptop, phone, and blood sugar meter are there."
"Got it." Derek listened to the noises Andrea made looking around. "All gone. It looks like the place has been ransacked. Maybe someone didn't know what they were looking for."
"Andrea, this is really important. I need you to call the police."
"When was the last time you talked to her?"
"Five days ago. She was exhausted and...Andrea. I think I know what happened."
"What?"
"She was going to get lunch with Theo Masterson the day after I spoke to her."
"That actor she's obsessed with?" said Andrea as if she didn't already know. Before Nori started dating Derek, Theo was the object of her affection. Andrea said the dorm was full of posters of the guy.
"Her and thousands of other girls. I kept joking he was in love with her because he offered to drive her to set for a week and they were hanging out."
"You don't think she ran off with him do you? Nori's not like that. I know she was really into him for a while, but it was just a celebrity crush, not something serious."
"No, I don't think she ran off with him. I think he kidnapped her."
"Why would a famous actor kidnap Nori?"
"Well, do you have any better thoughts? Why would Nori run off with him?" There was a long pause.
Then Andrea said, "I should call the police. I'll call you back when they get here."
