Chapter 40:

August 24, 2018

Nori had to work today, but Theo didn't have any more shooting days until next week. His driver brought him to her apartment complex.

"Don't tell anyone you brought me here."

"Same deal as last time?"

"Yes."

"You got it, sir."

Theo had on his hat and sunglasses. He avoided eye contact with anyone he passed.

Nori's unit was at the end of a corridor and around a corner. It was secluded. There was a camera above her door. He studied it to make sure what the boys had told him was true and sure enough all the wires on it had been cut.

This place wasn't safe for her. She was going to get killed if she stayed here. How could her boyfriend sleep at night knowing this is where she lived. His increasing desire to protect her was fighting with his need to figure out if she was the one.

Maybe her purity didn't matter. Either way he was here now and the answer could very possibly lie on the other side of that door.

He pulled a lock picking kit out of his pocket. Imogen taught him how to pick locks when he was 25, back when he lived with her and was still working in TV. It was hard to believe how long ago that was. He was 22 when he got his first part. It would be six years before he was in a movie. And now...now he was 36, almost 37. Life moves pretty fast.

He put on a pair of gloves and swiftly picked the lock. He slipped inside.

He should have started this earlier. But he hadn't. He still had quite a lot of time to search before Nori could possibly get back.

He started with her laptop which lay plugged in on the bed. He flipped it open to be greeted by a password.

That wasn't going to help. He looked around immaculately clean studio apartment. If he were to keep a journal or list of passwords he'd keep it in her desk.

He sat down on her chair and looked in each drawer. In the top drawer he found her birth certificate and social security card. A credit card and a bank statement. He looked at the statement disappointed at the pittance she had.

How could she survive on that small amount of money? He put that back the way he found it.

In the next drawer he found a bunch of receipts and bills. She wasn't being taken care of.  The bill on top was her rent. How could she afford that? Or was she spending almost everything she made on rent? This alleged boyfriend was leaving her to fend for herself and doing nothing to support her. She deserved to be treated like a queen!

The last drawer had a bunch of notebooks. He flipped them open. One was full of rough drafts for lighting plans.

The next was a journal. It was old. It was from 2010. It was about her parents.

He didn't want to read about the pain he had caused her. He felt so guilty. As he was about to close it when saw the year circled. How peculiar. It was just circled on the first page. Then the name Pat was circled. On the next page Darla was circled. Then an exclamation point on the next page.

Hmm. He wondered. He went to her computer and typed in 2010PatDarla!

He doubted it would work, but before he knew it he was in. He went to her desk and put the notebooks back.
