The Dauntless were the first to rise after the ceremony had finished. We all cheered and started jogging out of the building. Some of the other transfers looked back at their parents.
I didn't. I had no reason to. I had nothing to leave behind.
The jog of the huge crowd started to transform into a run, all of us happy to be free. I looked ahead and saw that some of the older Dauntless had started to climb up on the train track supports. I followed. I had climbed trees all of my free time in Abnegation. I had snuck out of the house after my father had fallen asleep and ran. I had let my long legs carry me to new places. I didn't have to do that in secret anymore.
Once we had all climbed the beams, a steel grey train started to approach us. The swarm of black slowly started to move forward, going alongside the train. The first person at the front of the swarm jumped on.
We had to do the same.
I grabbed onto the small crevice on the side of the dull train cart with my left hand and used the momentum from my running to haul myself in. I was the first transfer into the cart. There was a Candor girl struggling to get up.
"Here, take my hand," I said while jutting my hand for her to take.
"Thanks," she replied. She grabbed onto my hand and I hauled her up into the cart. "My name's Christina."
"I'm Taylor," I greeted her. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted an Abnegation girl struggling to keep up. It was Beatrice. I quickly got up and helped her up just like I did Christina.
"Thanks, Taylor," she said out of breath.
"No problem Beatrice," I replied. "Christina this is Beatrice. Beatrice, Christina,"
"Nice to meet you," said Beatrice.
"Hi, Tris," Christina smiled.
"Tris?" I questioned.
"Yeah, I mean Beatrice is a nice name, don't get me wrong, but it's too... Abnegation. You're Dauntless now, you need a Dauntless name," Christina explained.
"I like it," I replied.
"Me too," Tris smiled.
As the train picked up speed, Tris sat down on the wall of the cart. "Fast train means wind, wind means falling out. Get down."
Christina and I both listened and sat down either side of her. We talked about our families, factions and why we chose Dauntless.
"Get ready," a voice sounded. 'Ready for what?' I questioned in my head. 'A dance party or sudden massacre?'. I then proceeded to look ahead and caught sight of the people up front jumping off the train and onto a roof.
"Guys, we're jumping," said a female voice and saw that the voice belonged to a girl from Candor.
"Because that makes perfect sense, Molly, jump off a train onto a roof," said a boy next to her. He was also a Candor. His beautiful dark brown hair was moving in the wind and his forest green eyes were scanning the landscape. Wait! Did I just say 'beautiful'? There's something wrong with me.
"That's kind of what we signed up for, Peter," retorted the girl, Molly.
I made the foolish mistake of looking down only to realise that the tracks were almost 7 stories up.
I was scared of heights.
"Well, I'm not doing it," said an Amity boy. He had an olive complexion and wore a loose orange sweater over dull yellow trousers.
