I drop off the truck and climb in the car with Barry. "Thank you so much for the help today, really you saved me. That's twice today. My own personal hero," you joke.
Barry grins back at me. "Of course," he chuckles, "happy to be your hero." He gives a mock flourished bow from the driver seat that you giggle at.
"So, what brings you to Central City?" he asks in attempts to get to know me better.
"The opportunity to be one of the first in researching and forming laws for meta-humans and others with power. There aren't laws to handle them. Obviously right now in the capacity I am working is looking at prosecution, but I would love to work on laws for meta-human protection too. People fear what they don't understand, and I would hate to see the population turn against meta-humans that want to help. Or other's wanting to use them for a darker purpose."
"Like The Flash?"
"Yeah, like The Flash."
There is moment of silence as Barry considers this. "That's honourable of you, and something I haven't considered."
"Thanks. Can I ask kind of a personal question?"
"Uh, sure." Barry says, a little uncertain
"Why are you living with Joe?"
Barry goes silent and his smile fades away.
"Oh god, I'm sorry. Listen, you don't have to tell me if you aren't comfortable." I say a little mortified.
Barry gives a sigh, of what I'm not sure. "My father was just acquitted of my mother's murder. Joe raised me while my father was in jail. His name is cleared now, but he didn't want to stay in Central City.
I nod as I listen intently. "Thanks for being comfortable enough to share with me. I can understand your father needing to leave. Sometimes people just need an escape from their past." The last part I say looking out the window as I try not to let my memories invade my thoughts.
Barry looks at me as my tone of voice changes, he can sense something is wrong, but he leaves it be as he sees the pained look on my face in the reflection of the car window.
Soon we pull into my drive and we get out of the car. Barry breaks the awkward silence as he sniffs the air. "I smell pizza." His stomach grumbles again and he gives a sheepish grin. "Sorry, it's been a long day."
You giggle, "Its fine, the pizza is here. Go. Eat as much as you want."
"You are going to regret that statement," Barry says as his goofy grin returns. He bounds up the steps to my front door with me close on his heels.
As we enter my current mess of a house we can see Joe has already found plates and has doled out slices and has cold beers open and awaiting us. I was thankful as my stomach starting making protests against its emptiness too.
Barry laughed, "Looks like your stomach agrees too."
"Oh yes," I practically run for a plate and a beer and start to scarf the food down in a most unladylike fashion.
Joe laughs, "You could almost out eat Barry like that."
I stop for a second, "As long as I don't I will still retain some femininity. Moving makes me hungry." I set down the pizza and go for the beer. "And that goes down smooth after a day like today."
Barry laughs as he quickly downs his beer and pizza, "I am getting more. I told you I'd make you regret your statement." He winks at me.
Joe gives me a questioning look.
