Getting Better

Chapter 9

I woke up to Austin moving out of the bed. After the events of yesterday, I'm starting to feel better. I didn't know what Austin was doing, I wanted to know so badly.

I rolled over to see that Austin was going through a bag of clothes. He pulled out a pair of shorts, and a light blue t-shirt. After I realized he was going to change at the end of my bed, I quickly rolled back over.

After he was done changing, he climbed back into bed next to me. I rolled over to face him, it took him a couple minutes to realize that I was awake. He was on twitter, tweeting to the mahomies. I always thought it was cute when he took the time out of his day to talk to them.

After about three minutes of him being on twitter, an me staring at him, he locked his phone and looked at me with a huge smile. Damn how I missed that smile!

"Good morning beautiful!" he said as he snaked his arms around my waist.

"Good morning!" I replied back as sweetly as I could.

I hadn't realized how sore my throat was until I tried to talk. Austin looked at me with a sparkle in his eyes. We just sat there staring at each other for about five minutes. We heard a knock on the door, and Dr. Smith walked in with a smile on his face.

"Well good morning Katie. I'm glad to see that you are up. How are you feeling this morning?" He asked sitting on his rolling chair.

"I'm feeling better. My throat hurts a little though." I said my voice scratchy.

"It will be like that for a couple days. Do you remember your surgery yesterday?"

"Wait? What! I had surgery yesterday!?"

"Yes. Your brain tumor was causing a blood clot. We had to go in and remove it. Which means with the tumor gone, you no longer have cancer."

"I don't have cancer anymore!?"

"That is correct."

I was so excited, I looked at Austin with the biggest smile on my face.

"I was looking at your charts, and you seem to be doing a lot better. You should be out of here by Wednesday." he continued.

"Thank you so much."

I was so happy I get to go home soon! As soon as the doctor left, I rolled over towards Austin. I looked into his eyes, I put my hands on his face, and kissed him passionately. I pulled away smiling. I couldn't be more happy right now.

"There are some very special people down stairs waiting to see you." Austin said still looking into my eyes.

"Who?! I wanna know!" I sat up looking at him, waiting for a response.

"I'll tell them to come up here."

After Austin got off the phone, he looked back at me. "You have to close your eyes. They want it to be a surprise." he said putting his hand in mine.

I quickly flipped onto my stomach and buried my face into the pillows. I heard Austin start to laugh at me.

"Tell me when they are here!" I demanded.

I started to think who it could possibly be. I knew it couldn't be the crew because they were leaving with Mama and Em to go to Florida. I was hoping it wasn't my parents. Austin knew I never wanted to see them again.

After about five minutes of waiting. I heard the door click open.

"Ok Katie, you can look now." I heard Austin's voice echo through the quiet room.

I quickly sat up and looked at the room. I was in shock, I didn't know what to say or do. Mama, Emily, Robert, Zach, Alex, and Aunt Lisa, were all in my room looking at me. I just opened my arms for a hug. All at once they came at me and have me a group hug.

I was still in my pajama's and wanted to take a shower. I pulled out my phone and texted Austin. He was at the end of my bed playing "Candy-Land" with Em and Alex.

*Text Convo*

Me: Hey. I kinda wanna shower and get ready.

Austin: Ok. Do you want me to ask them to come back later?

Me: Would you please?

Austin: Anything for you babe.

Austin got off the end of the and walked up to Mama. I don't know what he said but in a matter of minutes, everyone had left the room.

I was looking through the bag of clothes that was here. There was nothing for me I'm this bag, except for a bra and underwear. Austin walked back into the room I looked at him with a questioning look across my face.

"Sorry babe, all your clothes are still in boxes. I didn't have time to look through them. I packed some of mine for you." He said walking towards the bag.

"It's ok. What did you pack me?" I asked him sitting down on the bed.

He pulled out a pair of black basketball shorts, a yellow t-shirt, and a white snap back. He knew how much I loved to wear his clothes and snap backs.

He grabbed my hand and lead me to the bathroom. Something was missing from the bathroom. There was no mirror.

"Austin were did the mirror go?" I asked him stoping right away.

"Oh... I had it taken out." he said looking away from me.

"Why?"

"I didn't know if you would want to see what you looked like after your surgery."

"What do you mean "look like"?"

He sighed. He walked out of the bathroom, and back in with the mirror. He hung it back on the wall. I walked over to it and looked into it. My hair was gone, I was bald. I started to cry, Austin came and put his seams around my waist.

"I just want to take a shower and hang with the crew." I said turning away from the mirror.

"Ok. Ill let you take your shower." Austin walked out of the bathroom, shutting the door behind him.

I took a quick five minute shower, got dressed, put on Austin's hat, and walked out of the bathroom without looking into the mirror again.

I walked out and everybody was already waiting for me. I saw Em sitting in the chair on Austin's lap, playing on his phone. I giggled and ran over to her, lifting her out of his lap.

"KATIE!" Em yelled as she wrapped her arms around my neck. I sat down on the bed with her still in my arms. I sat with Em on my right and Austin on my left for hours. We talked with the crew for hours. We laughed, played games, and just had fun like we always do.

I felt my phone buzz under my thigh. It was a twitter notification from Austin. It was a picture of me hugging Em earlier. The caption read: Katie finally got to see Em again. So happy they are both healthy and safe.

I looked through the replies the photo had gotten. There was no hate at all.

I locked my phone and put it back under my thigh. I leaned into Austin and focused on the game Em was playing. Today was the best day ever. I never want it to end.
