The Day He Opened Up To You A Little

As our first expedition approaches, Commander Erwin has us all train extra long every morning and evening. The morning exercises were lead by Captain Levi and in the evening Hanji took over.

"Wake up, brats! It's time for your exercises!" Captain Levi greets us ever so kindly in the morning. I'm kinda surprised they even let him in the girls dorm at all, but I guess they don't care since this is the military.

"Ugh," Sasha groans beside me. "Why do they have to make us exercise BEFORE breakfast! I'm starving!" Along with other groans and complaints throughout the room.

"You're always starving, Sasha," I point out nonchalantly.

"If I hear any complaining then you're all doing exercises for an extra hour!" Captain Levi yells out when he hears all the annoyed groans from the girls.

The girls all get up quickly when they hear this and scramble to get their workout clothes on.

"Anyways, you shouldn't be complaining so much, Sasha, the Captain might take your breakfast away." I warn her in a joking matter.

"What?" She shouts. "No! He wouldn't!"

"Trust me, he has no remorse," I tell her.

"Oi! Cadet (Y/N), what'd I say about talking that way about your superiors!" Levi shouts to me from the front door.

He must be in a bad mood, because I don't think I said anything that bad.

"Sorry, Captain!" I shout back.

"Tch," he exclaims plainly with an eye roll and leaves the girls dorm.

"Better slow your roll, (Y/N)," Sasha laughs. "You're already on his bad side...speaking of rolls, I want one right now!"

I scowl her way, "I know I'm on his bad side, okay? But I won't let that happen again! I don't want to give him another apology. So, I'll be way more careful about what I say around him."

"You already apologized to him?" She asks curiously.

I nod, "Yeah, for what happened the other day."

Sasha and I finish changing in silence, as we both put our hair up and meet everyone in the courtyard for morning excercises.

During exercise that day we start by running laps as a warm-up. Captain Levi makes us all run five laps to start with. Some cadets didn't want to do that many so they told the captain they already did it but Captain Levi knew immediately that they were lying and punished them with five more laps.

As I run my laps easily at a steady pace, I notice as Captain Levi scans the crowds of cadets he always ends up looking at me for quite some time. Am I doing something wrong? I mean, I am far ahead of everyone else just because I'm a naturally fast runner, but I don't think he'd find that's very stare worthy stuff.

"Oi! Pick up the pace, maggots!" Levi shouts to the slower cadets behind me.

I look behind me and see my friends all running together in a group, laughing and going slow. I would run with them but they're too slow and distracting. Though, Eren and Mikasa run ahead of the group too because they're the type who know they need to focus, and of course Armin tags along with them too. I just run alone though. I assume Captain Levi was yelling at Connie, Sasha, Krista, Ymir, and Jean to speed up since they're the farthest behind at the moment.

I'm the first one to finish my five laps so I go up to Captain Levi to let him know.

"I finished, sir!" I salute, out of breath.

"Hmm, good," he says. "At least you have good speed compared to all these slackers."

Did he just compliment me? Well, I mean, what he'd probably consider a compliment.

"Umm...thank you, sir," I say unsurely. I catch myself staring at Captain Levi from behind him but don't look away, figuring he won't catch me.

"Oi," he says flatly. "You gonna stare at me all day?"

"Huh?!" I shout. Shit...he caught me AGAIN! "S-sorry, sir!"

"Heh," he smirks slightly. "Isn't that what Cadet Jaeger was saying the other day? That you were staring at me?"

"Huh? You heard that?" I question, my face turning beat red.

"Tch, I'm not deaf, brat!" He states. "He was practically shouting it througout the whole mess hall."

"I-I'll remember to kill him later," I mutter, still embarrassed.

"Fine then, less cadets for me to punish the better,"

"I thought you liked punishing people though," I say. I quickly realize what I said and cover my mouth in embarrassment. I guess there's no going back from what I said now.

I look at Levi though, expecting to see a scowl or a murderous expression, but I only see him smirking.

"Of course I like punishing people," he smirks. "But it gets exhausting sometimes."

"Oh," I say awkwardly.

"You're a little strange, cadet," he says out of nowhere. I look up, wondering what he's talking about. "You're the only person to have the guys to approach me and not piss themselves. You did walk up to me the other day and sit right next to me. I mean, I guess that's not strange but more...brave, I guess."

"Well...I stopped letting people intimidate me so much," I say honestly.

"Hmm, well that's not the smartest thing, I guess," he says. I notice of the way he speaks, it sounds like he's feeling unsure of what he's saying. Or maybe insecure about it. Probably because he doesn't open up to most people like this. "You're just lucky I didn't kill you for approaching me. But someone might with your type of thinking."

"Well, it's better than being scared of everybody," I tell him. "I used to be scared of every person I saw! But when I started my military training I guess I thought that if I am So scared of humans then there's no way I could ever face a titan, I suppose..."

"Hmm," he says. "Well, I guess you're not a total idiot. You've got some common sense in you."

Is that another one of Levi's compliments? He has the weirdest way of being nice.

"Umm...thanks, I guess," I say, unsure if that was actually considered a compliment but I guess I'll accept it as one.

"Don't sound so unsure every time I compliment you," he says, slightly irritated.

"With you...it's kinda hard to tell a compliment from an insult..." I say stupidly.

"Hmph," he huffs. "Well, I don't give compliments often, so you'd expect I'd be pretty bad at it."

"Yes, that's understandable, Captain," I agree.

He looks at me for the first time during this conversation and says, "I'll allow you to call me Levi when we're alone."

Is he implying that he wants to be alone with me more often? Wait, what am I thinking?! Of course not!

"Alright, sir- I mean Levi," I say. I mean, technically we are alone since everyone else is still running, so would that be a right time to call him Levi? God, now I'm always going to be worrying abiut whether we're actually considered alone or not!

He only shakes his head at me, but not in an angry way at all, before turning to the other cadets, telling them to hurry up so we can get started on the actual workout.
