The next day at breakfast the mess hall is too noisy so I decide to just bring my breakfast outside to escape the noise. My friends can live without me for one meal, right? Besides, it was one of those rare warm mornings so I thought I couldn't pass it up.
As I walk outside, I spot a familiar person sitting by himself against the wall of the Survey Corps HQ. With his short statue and stoic face, I know exactly who it is. Captain Levi. The same man I accidently made fun of right in front of him. I hesitate for a moment, thinking that I should probably apologize. But that would be...scary, to say the least.
However, I take a deep breath and decide to walk up to him.
"Umm, hi," I say nervously but try my best to sound confident, miserably failing.
He looks up at me with a blank expression, "Tch, brat, what do you want?" He questions rudely.
"Umm..." I have no idea what to say so I just take a seat next to him quickly.
"Hey, what are you-"
"Great weather we're having, huh?" I cut him off so that I don't have to answer his question. I look over and see he doesn't have any food. "Hey, aren't you gonna eat?"
I swear I am feeling the darkest aroma release off of him every second.
"What's it to you if I eat or not?" He asks bitterly. I sigh and rip off half of my toast and hand it to him. "What's that for?" He asks, staring at the bread in my hand with a weirded out look.
"It's for you," I tell him as if it were obvious. I quickly shove the bread in his hand before he can decline it. I watch him stare at it for a moment, maybe thinking I poisoned it or something, before starting to take small bites from it.
"So...umm...sorry about what you heard me say yesterday," I say. "I didn't mean that at all, I swear."
"Oh, now I see why you're being nice to me," he says and I think I heard anger in his voice. "You want me to forgive you, is that it?"
"N-no!" I defend myself. "I just-"
"Look, I am your Captain, not your friend," he states simply and emotionlessly. "I don't care if you like me or not and I don't need you talking to me as if we're buddies. All I ask of you is to obey me and just answer with a simple 'yes, sir', do you get that?"
I look away from him quickly to hide the redness of my face. He's much colder than I thought.
"Just because you're a captain and a superior," I say, while still looking away. "Doesn't mean you can't have friends. Hanji makes friends with the other cadets with no problem, so it's not like it's a crime to have friends. And even if you did have friends, that doesn't mean they have to treat you any different than their superior."
I look away from him, listening for a cold response but I don't get one.
"Where did that come from?" He asks after a moment.
"Umm...I was just saying...umm..." I mutter, having no idea what I'm earth to say. "S-sorry, sir."
"It looks like you've done the impossible, cadet," he states. "You've left me speechless."
I look up out of curiosity, a little surprised by his words. I'm actually shocked that I didn't get yelled at or smacked in the head like Hanji did.
"What's your name anyways, cadet?" He asks.
"Umm...(Y/N) (L/N)," I answer.
"Hmm," he says. "Well, thanks for the bread, cadet (Y/N)," he gets up and starts walking away, but turns back around and looks at me, "I won't punish you this time for your rude remarks yesterday. Just don't talk to your superiors like that again."
"Y-yes, sir!" I salute.
He turns around and starts walking back while saying, "I'll be keeping an eye on you to make sure if that, cadet (Y/N)."
My face turns red as I think of Levi's eyes always on me and feel a little embarrassed. But the surprising thing is...I wasn't punished for yesterday OR back talking him today. I wonder why.
