The Duchy of Oakwood lay in the north of an ancient kingdom. It was owned by Duke Egbert and his wife, Duchess Ermelinda. The Duke and Duchess also had a son. He was called Arthur.
Arthur of Oakwood was a sensitive child from the day he was born. He lived with his parents in an old castle set in an ancient oak forest. From his bedroom, he could hear the owls hoot at night.
Down the road, there was a tavern, called the 'Acorn', but Duke Egbert and Duchess Ermelinda of Oakwood never went there. Arthur was their only son, and they didn't want him to mix with the 'wrong kinds of people'.
The Duke and Duchess had high hopes for baby Arthur. One day he would be a brave knight and make his country and parents proud. He might even rescue a princess, marry her, and become king.
As Arthur grew older, it soon became clear that couldn't stand either loud noises or shining armours. Whenever he saw a sword or a helmet he started to cry.
"He is still very young," said Duchess Ermelinda. "He will grow out of it."
Duke Egbert agreed, and they stopped giving him toy weapons. But what else could they give the little boy for his birthdays to prepare him for his noble future?
