The following night, after the concert, Arthur went to bed late and fell asleep immediately. Duke Egbert wanted to go into the garden with the lyrist. They sat behind a bush and waited.
"It usually happens during the witching hour," Leandro whispered.
At the stroke of midnight, they saw a small white owl fly out of Arthur's bedroom window and land on the balustrade of the balcony. Then the shadow of a big brown owl came swooping down from between the oak trees. It went straight for the smaller bird and tried to scratch its eyes.
The white owl flung itself from the balcony, the big owl followed and attacked it with its wings and claws. The small bird defended itself with all its strength. The chase and fight went on for a few minutes, then the white owl returned to the balcony. Its feathers were streaked with blood, its blue eyes numb with terror.
The injured bird slipped back into Arthur's bedroom, and the shadow of the brown owl disappeared between the oak trees along the side of the castle.
