At mealtimes, Arthur poked around in the food on his plate and ate very little. He became paler and thinner and was often sick.
Duke Egbert called the best doctors in the country to examine his son and find out what was wrong with him. They wrote long prescriptions, they tried every medicine, nothing helped.
One day Arthur was sitting on the balcony in front of his bedroom wrapped in a warm blanket to get some fresh air. His mother was reading him a story, when they suddenly heard music in the distance.
"Shhh, what's that?" the boy asked, and his mother stopped reading.
"It's only some musicians," said the duchess. "Probably some travelling folk playing at the Acorn Tavern."
"Can we go and see them?" Arthur asked and his face lit up.
"But you're sick, darling," his mother reminded him, "and we never go to the Acorn."
Arthur sank back into his armchair and cried. He didn't want to listen to the rest of the story.
