When Arthur turned six, the duke and duchess got a cute little pony for their son. Surely he would love to ride on a horse like his father did.
But Arthur screamed as soon as he saw the animal. He was scared of big animals, especially horses, and to him, this animal looked an awful lot like a horse. He didn't stop screaming until the pony was taken out of sight.
"He is such a sensitive boy, our Arthur," said Duchess Ermelinda. "He will grow out of it."
Duke Egbert agreed, but he was getting worried about his son.
The Duke and Duchess loved Arthur very much. The older he got, the less they cared about what he would become when he grew up. They just wanted him to be happy now.
Young Arthur never laughed. He was not interested in anything. He sat in his room all day and stared out of the window. His blue eyes were often wide open with fear, even though there was nothing to be afraid of.
