AN: Gamerartist579, this was so much fun to write.
Becoming Darkwing Duck's partner was no easy feat, you knew this for a fact. It took you months to gain the superhero's trust -give or take the added time your best friend Launchpad earned you when he tried to help. You loved Launchpad very much, but sometimes he just couldn't read a room.
Even when you did gain his trust, and the honorary title of sidekick, he still wouldn't let you in. That itself took you double the time. When you finally knew the man under the mask, Drake Mallard, everything fell into place. You were your happiest when around him and his daughter, Gosalyn.
But, if earning his complete trust was hard, then becoming his romantic must be extremely difficult.
So, you decided not to try. Why risk your strong friendship over these feelings?
----
Launchpad was the first to notice your pining. It was pretty obvious, at least he thought so. You didn't. Of course, you didn't. You couldn't see how you watched Drake tuck Gosalyn into bed with the fondest smile. You couldn't see how close you sat next to him on the couch during movie nights.
"(Y/N)," Launchpad said one day while helping you wash dishes. "When are you going to tell DW?"
"Tell DW what?" you asked, too sure your love was hidden so well that your best friend couldn't know. He would never know.
"That you have feelings for him."
The plate you were drying off almost slipped from your hands. You turned to the taller duck, eyes wide. "What?"
"You're not subtle, (Y/N)." Launchpad replied with a chuckle. "It's obvious. So...?"
"I'm not telling him, ever, Launchpad."
"But (Y/N)-"
"No, I'm not ruining our friendship over something so stupid!" you turned your gaze back to the plate back your hand. You didn't mean to snap at him, but he had to understand it would just ruin the best thing in your life.
Launchpad sighed. "Okay."
He never brought it up again and you were glad.
----
Gosalyn was the second to notice. The girl could read people as effortlessly as breathing, but somehow your feelings for her dad slipped past her radar.
It became clear to her when the two of you finally allowed her to join you on night watch. She wasn't paying attention to the city, instead she found herself drawn to the way you scooted oh so subtly close to her dad.
Her dad glanced at you, either aware of the movement or questioning why you were an inch closer than before. Gosalyn knew her dad could be a little too in character to notice the obvious sometimes. And she was going to make sure he knows.
When Gosalyn and you were left to your own devices later that day -her dad had already went to bed for the day, giving her the perfect time to plot.
"So," she said, kicking her sneaker-covered feet up on the coffee table. "How long have you been in love with my dad?"
You were less surprised than the first time you were asked, so you plopped down on the seat beside her. "I don't really know when it started. It just happened."
"You know you should tell him right?"
You opened your beak to argue, but shut it immediately. This was Gosalyn you were talking to. She wasn't going to take a no for an answer. And arguing with her was like arguing with a brick wall.
"I'll think about it."
It wasn't the reply Gosalyn wanted, but she accepted it anyway.
----
Drake was the last to know. He didn't know why he didn't see the signs sooner. It was right there in front of him, but he just overlooked it.
They were standing on the rooftop of an office building, watching the lights pass below. The cold wind was blowing through the silent -as silent as it could be- city.
You took off your mask, letting the wind blow through your hair and other your face. You had your eyes closed and a soft smile gracing your beak. You looked beautiful.
Darkwing Duck just stared, it hitting him hard like a electric train and shocking him to his core more than Megavolt ever could.
He was in love with you.
