I follow his gaze upwards, towards the pair of phoenixes.
"I still find them beautiful, don't you?" he murmurs, looking thoughtful. I nod my agreement, not wanting to shatter the near silence, that was currently only stirred by the animals that surrounded us.
He turns to me, but slowly, as though unsure of what to do next.
"What now?" he asked, voicing the very thoughts that had, moments before, been going through my own head. I remain silent, searching inwardly for an answer, any answer. The only one I could come up with, though simple, perfectly fitted what was actually running through my brain.
"I... I don't know. I really don't. I take it you don't either?"
He shakes his head, his face still. We remain there, wordlessly watching the rainbow of birds flying overhead, the creatures wandering through the surrounding trees, and altogether enjoying our surroundings.
After a few minutes, I break the silence.
"So you have no idea why?" I murmur, my words cutting through the silence like a knife through soft butter.
"Hmm? Sorry, what did you say?" he replies, seeming like he had just returned from another world. Maybe he did...
"You have no idea why? The animals follow you, that is." I repeat. He looks thoughtful for a few moments, then shakes his head.
"The only thing I can think of would be my paren-... Uh, nevermind..."
Muttering, then cutting himself off as though realizing he was about to share someone else's secret... Why? Is there something he doesn't want me to know? Or does he just not want the world to know? Strange...
I glance at him, curious, then decide that he has no reason to share his life story with me, though he had already shared a large portion. But why did he share so much, if only to leave out another part? I shake my head slightly, hoping he doesn't notice, in an attempt to clear my head. Don't be nosy, Estrella!
He glances at me for a moment and opens his mouth as if to say something, but seems to think better of it, and closes his mouth less than two seconds later.
"I should probably get going... My parents might start to worry. I told them I was hanging out with a friend, and it took me a while to find you in the woods. That is, if you can even call that finding." I once more break the silence, and he glances at me for a second before nodding his agreement.
"Will you come back?" He asks, apprehensive.
I hesitate before replying, then decide.
"Sure, but it might be a while."
He smiles slightly but doesn't seem to realize it. I can immediately when he does because it falls quicker than a boulder in an avalanche.
"Alright then. I'll see ya then, I guess..." He murmurs, suddenly outwardly cold.
I turn in the direction that I know my house is, then shift and run.
